K.L. Beats to the Drums of the Rum Jungle

Occupying the corner estate of Kuala Lumpur’s lively Jalan P. Ramlee, there’s an entertainment site that magically takes you inside a Malaysian jungle experience. It is right in the shadow of the nation’s megalithic Petronas Towers where Trend Matrix Enterprises Sdn Bhd, under the passionate stewardship of Ronnie Choong, opened their newest and hottest club, the Rum Jungle.

The shooting flames of Rum Jungle’s magnificent entrance offer a visual appetizer into the interior’s superb décor and actively act as a contrary concept to complement Trend Matrix’s very chic Poppy Collection outlets, which fascinatingly, is located just on the opposite of the street. Evoking the ecosystem of Malaysia’s tribal cultures, tropical foliage envelopes the building’s perimeters, reinforced in a cover of jungle mist, atmospheric lighting, water features, flaming torches, giant river boulders, and even a trapeze and a swing-rope. The Jungle Garden is the club’s spacious front yard and is a popular dining area offering an al-fresco environment around a theme as the name of the place suggests - peppered with tree trunks, bamboos, carved wood, thick ropes, and other kinds of decorative trivia that strongly implies a jungle theme.

In the adventurous spirit of the explorer, the restaurant’s kitchen has created a selection of local fusion-fare and also a wide choice of BBQ meats. With nine other clubs on the Jln P. Ramlee strip, Ronnie is no stranger to the importance how choosing the right sound and lighting systems can shape the outlet’s character. It is no surprise that the sound reinforcement for Rum Jungle offers the guests the most diversified acoustic experience to be found on the strip. In the club, people watching is the order of the night and the main room with the main bar and the elevated performance stage is where the beautiful people meet.

Planning the sound reinforcement for the different areas (main room, V.I.P. area, dining area, foldback for stage) meant using different speakers to perform the various audio tasks and create the essential ambiances. Because of its open-air architecture, designing the live sound reinforcement for the main room posed some acoustic challenges especially as the room’s seating was on two levels and with a huge wooden roof more than 15 metres high. The demanding concert-like delivery required for the stage’s FOH is superbly handled by using Nexo’s award-winning PS15 loudspeaker systems.

For the Main Room; two drops of two Nexo PS15 MKII and two Nexo PS15B (bass) are arrayed in a Top-Bass-Top-Bass configuration for each of the Left/Right FOH columns. Two Nexo Alpha AL-S2-CF subbasses were placed at L/R of stage with four Logic System LM15 (15” driver 600W) stage monitors providing foldback duties.

All the FOH and foldback speakers are powered by Camco Tecton 38.4 and Camco Vortex V6 power amplifiers. The elevated DJ booth is situated facing the stage and houses the soundman’s Allen & Heath GL3300-832 live mixing console. Here too you can find the heart and brains of the sound system, the twin racks fitted with Nexo controllers, Camco amplifiers and LA Audio processors (EQs, comps, etc.). The ambidextrous DJ readily alternates with the band and using the exceptional Allen & Heath’s Xone 92 club mixer, spins Reggae, Latin, Spanish, and even jams it up using the percussions set-up in his booth.

The indoor multi-area V.I.P. Bar and chill-out Lounge Area is directly adjacent to the performance area and has wooden stairs that lead to a private V.I.P. ‘treetop’ bar and seating. Its reflective ambiance transposes guests to a higher social experience with freely arranged sofas to give VIPs a more conducive environment to hang out. Because of the multi-zone areas, the sound management approach for indoors employs the Allen & Heath IDR8 digital mix processor with an Allen & Heath IDR-Out analogue expander and using Logic System IS series of full range loudspeakers: two IS8 (8” Bass 150W), four IS10 (10” Bass 200W), two IS23 (12” Bass 300W), two IS26 (15” Bass 500W) and the Ethos series monitors; two LM12 (12” driver 400W) for all the different levels (including the dining areas). All the Logic System speakers are powered by Camco’s Tecton series (24.4 and 32.4) power amplifiers.

Plasma displays, projectors as well as a myriad of automated lightings (spots, washes, etc.) and scores of Pars fitted on custom rigs are suspended at various locations within the venue to ensure that patrons are not only treated audibly but also visually.

Rum Jungle is indeed a world music bar and restaurant that provides a unique adventure into the heart of Malaysia’s rainforests while taking food and entertainment to a whole new height.
