Martin FiberSource for Australian Racing Museum
The Australian Racing Museum is off and running! Located in Melbourne’s Federation Square, the racing Hall of Fame, otherwise known as ‘Champions,’ is rapidly becoming one of the city's popular attractions. Employing the latest in audiovisual and display technology, this unique exhibition showcases the history of thoroughbred horse racing in Victoria, Australia.
Lightmoves' acknowledged expertise in the museum and display field enabled them to design, supply and commission the majority of the lighting for this project. Lightmoves’ work with museums and galleries throughout Victoria includes providing the fiber optic lighting and control for Melbourne Museum. They also provided total lighting control for the entire Federation Square complex.
As is the practice with most museums today, all display cabinets were lit with fibre optic lighting. The specification was performance-based, despite the contents of the display cases not being known at the time of quotation. Consequently, Lightmoves designed a system that would allow for maximum flexibility, while delivering the required light levels within each case.
The display cabinet lighting design was based around 48-fiber end-light cables. This was teamed with Digilin’s CDC50 adjustable, recessed fibre optic lens that offers full gimbal movement and beam angle adjustment from 16° to 35°. To illuminate exhibits deep inside the larger cases, Lightmoves also commissioned Digilin to manufacture custom, adjustable dropper-rod versions of the CDC50.
As the light sources were required to be bright, dimmable and operate quietly, after much consideration and testing, Lightmoves chose a customized version of Martin’s FiberSource CMY150 as the primary illuminator. A total of 50 units were supplied by Show Technology, Martin’s Australian representative.
“The ability to dim each light source remotely was important, as it enabled the curators to reduce the amount of light on certain objects,” explains Joe Casamento, Lightmoves’ project manager. “Too much light or a high UV content can damage sensitive artifacts.
“Traditionally we’ve used another supplier for this type of work but this time we opted to shop around for the light source component because we needed a smaller and quieter unit. We also wanted a unit that was dimmable on DMX in order to adjust the light levels.”
Joe was particularly impressed by the Martin FiberSource CMY 150. "It has a really nice DMX dimmable wheel built into it, a good light output, and is smaller in size and is quieter than models we’ve used previously,” he said. “We had the lenses custom made to suit the requirements: we only wanted white light and didn’t need the CMY color mixing that the unit offers. Martin was able to make them without the color mixing component.
“It’s a good looking job and the Martin FiberSource units have proved themselves to be a good light source.”
The Martin FiberSource CMY 150 is a professional fiber illuminator for permanent outdoor and indoor installations. Full CMY color mixing and unprecedented brightness combine to create new design possibilities for fiber applications. Intended for permanent installations, the FiberSource CMY 150 is designed around a robust IP44 rated housing. It is based on a very efficient 150 W lamp giving 6000 hours of lamp life.
