KBS Enhances Concert Hall Console Performance by Adding SSL XLogic Mic Pre Amps

KBS, the Korean state broadcaster, has purchased 12 Solid State Logic XLogic four-channel microphone pre-amplifier units, which are being used in conjunction with two of the broadcaster’s existing SSL consoles – an XL9000 K Series and a C100 digital production console.

KBS has been an SSL customer for 15 years and its most recent console purchases have included the 80-frame XL9000 K Series console for the KBS Concert Hall. This prestigious facility is used to broadcast and record live music events including classical and traditional Korean music.

The XL 9000 K is installed in a control room at the back of the concert hall and is used to record the live productions and to mix for TV, Radio and CD. There are also plans to record for SACD and DVD Audio.

Last year the KBS Concert Hall added a C100 Digital Production console, which was installed alongside the XL 9000 K and is being used as a sub mixer.

The 12 XLogic mic amp units provide a total of 48 mic inputs and have been housed in a custom built flightcase, which is being used as a remote stagebox for additional microphone inputs to either the XL 9000 K or the C100 consoles.

The entire order including the flightcase and internal wiring was supplied by SSL, with all external wiring and installation handled by SSL’s Korean distributor HanSeo International.

“By mounting the XLogic units in a stagebox and locating it close to the concert hall stage, KBS has been able to achieve the shortest path from the microphone to the pre-amps, thereby reducing any negative cable artefacts,” says Je Ho Shin, president of HanSeo International. “The performance of the XLogic units is of the highest quality and matches the quality of the mic pre-amplifiers KBS is already using with its XL 9000 K.”
