d&b's Banana Craze Spreads to the Far East
d&b audiotechnik's current fascination with bananas has now moved to the Far East where their S.E. Asia office recently held a three day seminar for sound engineering students, hosted by the National University of Singapore. Around 20 students from the University, LaSalle Art School and d&b partners from India and Indonesia joined in the craze and donned banana t-shirts for this group photograph.
The course was run by three of d&b's top training specialists, Ralf Zuleeg, John Taylor and Stefan Goertz. Sebastian Song, head of the S.E. Asia office, organised the course in conjunction with the Technical Theatre Association of Singapore and persuaded the University to host the event. "The course took place in a complex owned by the University where the facilities are extremely good," said Goertz. "They provided us with the space for lectures, demonstrations and further room to give the students hands on experience, which is essential in order to gain a full appreciation of how to achieve the best sound from a variety of loudspeaker configurations."
On day one, John gave students an insight into the practice and theory of basic sound system design. "We gave this part of the training in one of the well equipped lecture theatres at the University," said Taylor "which was an enjoyable day despite the 95% humidity, and was well received by all in the group." Day two saw Ralf presenting the theory of line arrays to the students, which was accompanied by practical demonstrations using the Q-Series range of loudspeakers. "We used our Klein array, a demonstration device of twenty 2" drivers mounted on perspex which can be used to demonstrate the effect on sound distribution that different shapes of line arrays can have," said Taylor. "The Klein array always goes down well, even though I knocked up the prototype in my garden shed," he said modestly. Day three was Stefan's turn and he tackled the complex topic of modifying the directivity behaviour of subwoofer arrays to achieve a controlled dispersion characteristic, a well known d&b fixation. The day was again a mix of talk, practical hands on work and demonstrations. "There was no doubt that as soon as the students were given the opportunity to try out the equipment and convert theory into practice for themselves, they became highly animated and enthusiastic," said Goertz.
The Technical Theatre Association of Singapore is a professional body that exists for people within the industry to network, meet and share ideas. Chairman Kenny Wong was delighted to work with d&b on this project. "We're always on the lookout for interesting events for our members," he said, "and when Sebastian discussed this with me I saw it as an ideal opportunity for some of our members."
