DPA 4006-TL – New Take on a Design Classic

DPA’s recently-introduced 4006-TL microphone is proving to be an invaluable addition to the company’s product range, winning prestigious new users and emphatic plaudits all round.

The classic DPA 4006 omnidirectional condenser mic has been in production for more than 20 years, firmly establishing itself as a worldwide reference by impressing studio owners and broadcasters as well as musicians and engineers with its precise, detailed and natural reproduction and transparent sound quality. The 4006-TL is a new version of the classic, with transformerless preamplifier and new state-of-the-art components as opposed to the transformer technology in the 4006, and is powered via a standard 48 V phantom power supply. This design increases the sensitivity and provides an extended low frequency handling capability (15 Hz to 20 kHz ±2 dB).

Austrian national broadcaster ORF has upgraded all its 4006s to TL versions, while closer to home, Danmarks Radio has upgraded nine 4006s to the new transformerless design. Explaining the decision, broadcasting inspector Jan Oldrup from DR Radio Recording says: "The microphone’s superior characteristics are not fundamentally different from the original 4006, but I can notice an ample, warmer and clearer sound, especially at the bottom end. The definition of the sound image at the top end is also improved. And another huge advantage is that the mic provides around an extra 12 dB more output.”

In Madrid, top Spanish producer José Luís Crespo has been using the DPA 4006-TL to record the soundtrack for Volver, the new Pedro Almodovar film due for worldwide release in March.

“DPA Microphones offer an astonishing transparency,” says longtime DPA user Crespo. “They offer such precision that it’s like working with surgical instruments. The 4006-TL gives me at least the same transparency and quality of the classic 4006 version, but adds a more ‘friendly’ response on extremely close up recordings, especially on mid frequencies. It was really nice to discover that the TL version has a sweeter response in comparison with the classic 4006, especially considering the 4006-TL is a transformerless model.”

The 4006-TL was also honoured at the recent PAR Excellence Awards which singled out the best new equipment exhibited at the New York AES show. “Transformerless upgrade to a classic mic, resulting in a sensitivity boost and improved low-end response,” declared the judging panel.
