QSC Hits the Jackpot in ‘Pachinko’ Gaming Arcade

One amusement concept unique to Japan is ‘Pachinko’, a fast-paced arcade game popular throughout the country. Sharing elements with both pinball and slot machines, Pachinko is played by some 22 million people, and has spawned a market worth 240 billion yen.
Amidst the clattering coins found in the 17,000 active arcades, a clear need exists for high-quality, intelligible audio. While sound sources generally are restricted to CD and broadcast feeds, one venue called LadyBird in Ritto Town has added a different twist.
Since the owner is a former musician, he also wanted the facility to build high-octane live music and DJ sessions into the entertainment programme, and tasked his technical representative Hidenori Kawamoto with sourcing a professional, fully-optimised system that could be distributed throughout the whole facility.
LadyBird presented the challenge to Kiyoaki Fukumiya from Kyoto Technical Office. After being approached by Shinco Yamada (from Japanese distributors ComodoMattina) Mr. Fukumiya proposed an exclusively QSC sound reinforcement solution, which Mr Kawamoto immediately accepted.
As a result, a total of 22 x AD-S282 sleek two-way column speakers have been distributed symmetrically across the ceiling, supported by two full-range AD-S82’s, with rotatable waveguide (acting as DJ monitors and sound reinforcement for live musicians). The system is powered by eight QSC PL230’s.
Mr. Kawamoto expressed his delight with the QSC system, highlighting in particular the pleasantness of the bottom end, and unique clarity of the mid-highs — sufficiently audible to rise effortlessly above the clang of coins but at the same time extremely comfortable on the ear.
The installation proves conclusively that QSC has once again hit the jackpot.
