Learning from and with grandMA at Republic Polytechnic

Just as the Republic Polytechnic in Singapore is committed to education, so is MA Lighting. Roughly one year after the completion of a full MA Lighting system installation, MA went back to the Republic Polytechnic to do a refresher course. Initially brought up as an idea whilst doing some maintenance, Jose de Castro from the School for the Arts quickly took the initiative to organise this training. In the end more than 20 lecturers and staff from the Republic Polytechnic (including The Republic Cultural Centre), participated to get an up-to-date knowledge of how to operate the system.
MA Lighting not only installed two grandMA ultra-light consoles, but also a grandMA video media server, an MA NSP and more than 216 dimmer channels from its dimMA compact dimmer range. The system is split up into two venues one of which is designed to be a virtual TV studio, plus another bigger TV studio including a complete rigging system. Both venues are used to teach the students essentials skills in lighting, lighting design and productions.
To enable the lecturers to get a better understanding of the system, MA Lighting brought in Low Wee Cheng as a freelancer with his practical background to give an introduction into programming the consoles and using the various functions of the grandMA 3D visualiser software, the grandMA video media server and of the dimMA compact. Particularly grandMA video raised quite a few eyebrows when people realised how easy it is to actually use. To give everybody a chance to operate the boards, two more consoles were brought in with a couple of grandMA onPC systems connected all via network.
The Polytechnic, on its new 20ha Woodlands campus was only opened 31st of July 2007 by the Prime Minister. It can cater to up to 13,000 students in various faculties. Republic Polytechnic is focused very much on industry relevance, not only on the curriculum but also of their equipment.
The MA Lighting system solution was offered and installed by MA Lighting's local partner Desisti Asia.
