Volkswagen Stands Out with Meyer Sound Loudspeakers and Matrix3

While elaborate multimedia presentations have provided a mind-blowing experience for enthusiasts at automotive shows, standing out from the crowd can be a tricky challenge for exhibitors. In recent Volkswagen exhibitions in cities including Frankfurt, Los Angeles, Tokyo and Detroit, veteran sound designer Bodo Bergmann of Bergisch-Gladbach, Germany-based BB Beschallungstechnik met the challenge by creating an immersive audio experience with Meyer Sound’s LCS Series Matrix3 audio show control system and self-powered loudspeakers.

Bergmann first decided to learn about Meyer Sound’s Matrix3 after reading its applications in Cirque du Soleil productions. He has become a strong proponent of the product ever since.

“Before we came across Matrix3, moving audio material with visual objects was much more time consuming and handling timing was very difficult,” says Bergmann. “We are thoroughly impressed by how Matrix3 has allowed us to move sound to precisely follow the video, lighting and live performances on the Volkswagen booth. It is the perfect solution for us.”

Equipped with Wild Tracks hard disk playback, the Matrix3 system provided Bergmann and his associate, Michael Schwarzer with a flexible structure for source playback, mixing, processing and routing. The system also enabled them to synchronize audio placements with 12 moving LED screens across the booth, including localizing audio according to the images onstage of cars driving from left to right. A CueMixer and a Lemur touchscreen served as the control interfaces for a total of 48 outputs delivered via a wide range of Meyer Sound self-powered loudspeakers including MM-4, CQ-1 and UPA-1P loudspeakers, UPJ-1P VariO loudspeakers and M3D-SUB directional subwoofers.

“With Matrix3, I can trust 100% with the audio quality and that it will run stably during the shows. It has given us more time to do the creative work and less time solving problems. The creative potential they deliver is practically unlimited,” says Bergmann.

Emsdetten, Germany-based Westfalen Sound Schallwand provided the systems for the Volkswagen booth in the Tokyo and Los Angeles shows, while equipment for the Detroit show was provided by Leonberg, Germany-based Sound and Light, and Lüneburg, Germany-based Profi-Musik Handels GmbH provided the system for IAA in Frankfurt.

Bergmann also raves the support he has received since using a Meyer Sound system. “With a great company and its knowledgeable support staff standing behind the product, and Michael operating the system, I feel very confident about using Matrix3 for achieving the audio result I’m aiming for each show,” adds Bergmann.

Westfalen Sound will again provide Meyer Sound systems for the Volkswagen booth in upcoming shows, including the 78th International Geneva Motor Show in Switzerland and Auto China 2008 in Beijing.
