Sir Mutha Vankatasubba Rao Concert Hall goes for K.M.E.

In mid 2008 the Sir Mutha Vankatasubba Rao Concert Hall opened in Chennai, India. The concert hall is part of the Madras Seva Sadan, a charity organisation which cares for underpriviledged women and children and runs schools. The location has about 1100 seats and a very impressing design - it is build fan-shaped with a concave rear wall and a huge balcony. This construction leads to the main acoustical challenge - the fan shape and the concave back wall enable a reflection of the sound which affects the perspicuity in the audience areas
Andy Munro of Munro Acoustics made the acoustical plans for this project. A computer-based acoustic simulation provided a few possibilities for the array of the audio systems to achieve an optimal sound spread in the hall. For a better demonstration of the acoustic performance he used the environmental building design software in addition. Andy Munro decided for an installation of horizontal and vertical clusters, as well as single speakers on the ceiling, below the balcony and as delay. On the recommendations of Daveston Ahimaz of Digital Device, Malaysia they put on K.M.E. systems of the Cluster and Prestige Series. Top parts QS 1122 and QS 2082 are used for the clusters, base support comes from QB 1181. Amplifying and controlling are provided by SMA 2000, SPA 1600 MP, SPA 3200 MP and digital controller DAP 26. The close cooperation between architects and interior designers induce a balance of optical features and sound of the systems.
Krish Kumar, project coordinator stated: "Munro Acoustics did a really good job. The sound is much better than it was before. All steps had been presented very illustrative so the outstanding result wasn't a big surprise for us. First of all the high-class sound systems of K.M.E. feature an important part in improving the sound. Regarding technical infrastructure the location is the first one of its kind in Chennai. The hall is now not only location for school programs but also a platform for international events, especially for performing arts."
