Indian Connection: Bandra Worli Sea Link Opened with grandMA
The Bandra Worli Sea Link in India is an eight-lane, cable-stayed bridge which links Bandra and the western suburbs of Mumbai with Worli and central Mumbai. With a length of 5.6 kilometres, it is one of the biggest bridges in South East Asia.
The Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC)'s 400 Million US-Dollar project was inaugurated on 30 June this year. The bridge is likely to reduce the travel time between Bandra and Worli from 60 to 7 minutes. For programming and controlling the opening ceremony, lighting designer Sonu A.B. used 1 x grandMA full-size, 1 x MA NSP, 10 x MA DMX Booster / Splitters and grandMA onPC software.
"I was asked by Done Events in Dubai to design and operate the opening ceremony", reported Sonu. "After getting in touch with this enormous construction project, I decided to light only the centre of the bridge and 250 metres to each side of this - resulting in a total length of one kilometre - a really huge area to light. Additionally we had to illuminate the bridge's 126 metre high tower.
"Programming for the show was the toughest element, as every time we began lighting it would start raining, so we had to continue working in our hotel rooms!" explains Sonu, adding: "Thanks to the great reliability and flexibility of the MA Lighting system, we managed it."
The whole show ran to Timecode and was broadcast live across India.
Done Events in collaboration with Munjal Events from India conceptualised and executed the whole event. SFX, Electrokraft, Uhlas & Reynolds was the lighting supplier for the event. Reynold's is the distributor of MA Lighting in India.
