Illuminati-NZ Goes Martin for Large Corporate Event

Illuminati-NZ (I-NZ), a professional show design and technical solutions company based in Christchurch, created an impressive lighting scheme for the dinner. Considerable planning went into the event, which was given a techno vs. cabaret theme and involved singing, music and dancing. The four stages included the main stage below the main grid, a jazz stage at the direct opposite end of the room and another two performance stages halfway down the room.
Mike Smith of I-NZ served as technical director and lighting designer for the event. He explains: “Technically the event was designed and programmed into two separate rigs. The first section of the rig was the main mother grid, which held a range of Martin MACs including MAC 2000 Profiles, MAC 600 washlights, MAC 250+ and 500 profile spots, and MAC 250 Kryptons. These focused primarily on the main stage, shark tooth cyc and dance floor. At a ten-meter height, the angle offered perfect light fold back into the dining area and surrounding stages.
“Five MAC 2000s framed an FX51 Sony staging projector, projected onto the up stage cyc, running a live I-NZ VJ, camera and logos. Using a wide-angle lens to create a thirty-foot projection, the MAC 2000s made for the perfect frame. The MAC 250s were centered with cone fabrics on either side of the stage, creating stunning effects with the simplest of gobos. The Krypton's were placed down (on) stage and achieved the massive shot over the dance floor, another one hundred meters and onto the stadium walls.”
The second section of the rig was also substantial and covered the two performance stages and the Jazz stage. Mike continues: “Lighting structures were designed to identify the stage locations and created an interactive 'techno' appearance. MAC 2000s were hung in the apex of a right angle truss configuration, with MAC 500s attached to custom MAC brackets, allowing us to continue the forty five degree angle through the MAC’s orientation. Tricky, very tricky to program on these angles, but the effect was well worth it. The two structures balanced each other out perfectly. During a special acrobatic cloth performance, performers were highlighted in mid air by Martin MAC 2000's, irised in from a range of angles. More MAC 2000s, MAC 500s, MAC 600s and Kryptons highlighted the Jazz stage.” All Martin equipment was supplied by Electro Tech Services through Martin’s New Zealand representative Kenderdine Electrical Ltd.
Mike says that the true power of the MAC 2000s became evident in the use of I-NZ custom (blackline) glass gobos. “As a manufacturer of gobos personally, it was exciting to see the true detail and crisp edges, over one hundred meters and in complete control through zoom, iris and remote focus.”
Due to the large number of fixtures involved, the control system was created on two LightJockeys. Mike explains: “Both controllers were designed and programmed to be a reflection of each other, creating one big LightJockey/Touch console over three screens. The two LightJockeys were written pre-event to follow the same cue structure, while using their own visualizations, creating the front and back of the stadium. The two systems were directly driven by the LightJockey Manger Touch. Two seventeen-inch flat screens and a Dell 8100>PCMCIA allowed for instant access. Fixture attributes were grouped into sections and mixed through in a wide range of rig and single transparent cues. Two clicks for the cue and the system was complete.”
Mike thanks the Light House crew, Jens Peter and Paul Pelletier from Martin for the many hours and follow up on all their detailed requests; an excellent crew on the day, and Electro Tech Services for the equipment and constant support.
