DPA Microphones Push Boundaries With The BLM6000
DPA Microphones has released a brand new accessory, the BLM6000 boundary layer mount. A flexible disc of rubber 75mm (3 in.) in diameter and 6mm (¼ in.) high, and weighing less than 12 gr. (0.4 oz.) without a microphone, the BLM6000 has an underside cavity for mounting a DPA 4060, 4061, 4062 or 4063 miniature microphone. It enhances the versatility of these mics by enabling them to capture the ambient sound of the area in which they are mounted.
The sound field that occurs when a microphone is placed on a reflective boundary has special characteristics including a 6 dB gain of direct sound and just 3 dB gain of the diffuse sound. The sound captured from this “pressure zone” has higher sensitivity, clarity, and intelligibility compared to the sound captured from the "free air" and serves as a kind of acoustical zoom.
The BLM6000 can be positioned on all sound-reflective surfaces such as tables, lecterns, floors, walls and ceilings, to benefit from the characteristics of the pressure zone. It can also be used to great effect on the inside lid of an open grand piano to obtain a very distinct, crisp sound. In general, the larger surface the better low frequency response, but the reverse effect can also be accomplished by placing the BLM6000 close to the edges of tables, stages, speaker stands etc to obtain bass roll off.
