Robe on the Menu at Top Gold Coast Restaurant

Melbas fuses an exotic mix of people and technology and is among the best known social zones in the area. It’s recently extended and renovated its cocktail bar, which now provides the visual ‘icing on the cake’ for the venue. The new cocktail space is an eclectic mix of light, colour and excitement - complete with Robe recessed 170 AT fixtures illuminating the dancefloor.
These were supplied by Robe’s Australian distributors ULA to installers Venue Technologies Australia. ULA has been supplying sound, lighting and AV technology to their clients at Melbas for 20 years in a long and fruitful working relationship.
The lighting scheme for the new bar was designed by Mick James and programmed by Luke Hall, who explains that the Robe ColorSpot 170 ATs were chosen for the dancefloor role because of the venue’s low ceiling height. This needed an extremely neat, tidy and unobtrusive fixture – and they fitted the bill perfectly. The ceiling is painted with cloud effects, so it was vital that the luminaires weren’t bulky or distracting under its gyprock facade.
Mick James says: “We’ve used Robe products since they first became available in their own right. They are great lighting fixtures and highly robust for installations like this, where reliability a vital factor in maintaining ongoing business.”
The recessed fixtures are custom finished in gloss black to blend in with the other colours and textural elements and surfaces of the space.
Another great advantage of the Recessed 170 ATs in this situation is their remote zoom function – seldom found on a fixture this compact - plus the fast and precise movement and Robe’s unique ‘slot and lock’ gobo system. Lamp longevity was also a deciding factor - the Recessed 170 AT fixture uses a 150 CDM long life lamp.
The fixtures are controlled by a ShowMagic PC-based lighting controller with LCD touch screen. This allows various club personnel to control and vary the mood and atmosphere of the space easily, and from anywhere within the venue.
