PLASA Innovation Award for Vertigo’s Vertex

Vertigo is celebrated the world-wide launch of Vertex at PLASA – where the unique joystick-controlled 3D flying system immediately scooped a prestigious PLASA Award for Innovation.

The first use of Vertex was in the making of the latest Harry Potter movie, and the system is now available from Vertigo, the London and Pinewood based rigging, motion control and entertainment structures specialists, for sale or hire worldwide.

Designed and engineered to fly people, cameras and objects across large areas in real time without complicated programming, Vertex is truly a significant advance in automation for the entertainment industry – the first 3D flying system that can be controlled and programmed in real time via a joystick.

This system has been designed to ensure the simplest of set-up and control with the highest technical capability. Crucially, it is certified to the most stringent (BGV-C1) safety standard.

Unlike other flying systems, moves can be made with a pair of touch-sensitive joysticks, eliminating the usual time consuming and complicated computer programming issues. In set-up mode, speed and direction controls can be changed from right to left hand to suit the operator, while joystick sensitivity can also be adjusted to suit each operator. The system can be installed (within a suitable structure) in under two hours and operators can start producing real time moves immediately.

The moves and speed, which previously would have required pre-calculation and programming, can now be saved in real time and played back as required. Pauses in plotting moves (when under creative direction) can be “smoothed” with one command, eliminating unwanted time lapses with ease. The possibilities for entertainment environments that are time-critical and rehearsal time-short are immense. From simple moves in aerial ballet shows to complex camera shots, Vertex delivers them all in real time.

The ease of use and the safety features within the system allow operators from other entertainment environments to deliver effects themselves, without the need of complex specialist training.

Vertigo MD Rebecca Loughran said: “Vertex is a completely new tool for the industry and allows safe 3D flying in ways that no other system on the market can achieve – it really is a spectacular innovation and we’re delighted that it was recognised as such by the PLASA Awards judges.”
