New Formula Sound Mixer Will Point Way Ahead

Stand No.J60 at the 2004 PLASA show marks the spot where Formula Sound will unveil a new product that heralds a significant change in direction for the DJ and club mixers on which the company has built its enviable reputation.

The new 6 channel (and as yet unnamed) mixer is the product of a joint research and development programme between Formula Sound and Funktion-One the renowned designer and manufacturer of advanced loudspeaker systems. During the programme various parties including leading DJs and Funktion-One aficionados were canvassed for their opinions. “Their views have had a fundamental impact on the design of the new mixer,” comments Formula Sound’s Tony Cockell. “We’ve listened carefully to their ideas and effectively produced the mixer the DJs would have built for themselves.”

Tony Andrews of Funktion-One adds: “We had to take action with regard to our club installations being so seriously compromised by the low sonic standards of nearly all the popular DJ mixers currently on the market. The only available mixers we considered to be up to our sonic standard were from Formula Sound. It was therefore a very natural progression for Funktion-One to collaborate with Formula Sound on producing such a revolutionary mixer which gives DJs the usability they require without compromising sonic quality.”

In direct response to the DJ’s demands the unit’s fader panel is removable, allowing channel and crossfade faders to be easily switched or replaced. This enables the DJ to change the unit, in situ, from linear faders to rotary faders (or vice versa) using the optional replacement fader panel.

Thanks to the input from the DJ’s the crossfader is mounted beneath the channel faders for more precise control, larger control knobs are fitted on the most frequently used functions, and access to external effects units has been improved, enabling this mixer to use the very latest new effects units which become available, without being tied to dated built-in effects.

In keeping with this theme of flexibility and choice which characterises the new unit, two of the channels are switchable between mic and line, and four are switchable between phono and line, offering tremendous versatility and making the unit suitable to many different types of application. A dedicated DJ mic console input is also provided which routes to the main mix only, but not to the monitor mix in order to prevent feedback. All connectors are mounted on the end of the mixer, at right angles to the control surface, so the unit can be used in free-standing mode.

The mixer will be available for viewing on both Formula Sound’s Stand, J60, and Funktion-One’s demonstration room on the first floor Mezzanine at PLASA.

To accompany the new unit, Formula Sound will also be displaying an impressive array of existing modular and fixed format mixers, zoner mixers and noise control equipment – the latter proving increasingly popular as regulations governing environmental noise become ever stricter.
