Lost Worlds in Qatar

The first exhibition of its kind in the world, Lost Worlds showcased the splendours of past life on earth and told the tale of the past five extinctions on earth. Visitors marvelled at a collection of some astonishing and rare treasures from the natural world dating back to the time of the dinosaur with the awe inspiring diplodocus and triceratops skeletons. Many rare and exquisite fossil specimens and some of the beautiful and fascinating creatures that have already been made extinct by our own human activity, and others that are on the verge of extinction, were also shown.
The project designers Pentagram Design along with management contractor Fraser Randall appointed David Atkinson Lighting Design (DALD) over two years ago for the important task of lighting this unique exhibition.
On arrival, visitors were channelled into the vast exhibition area through a purpose-built tunnel, which was lit to a subdued level allowing for the impact and scale of the space.
David chose to light the exhibition and environment dramatically by positioning the majority of lighting fixtures from high level trusses, which enabled him to get some acute angles across the large exhibits as well as the perimeter walls and graphics. Tight control of the lighting was key and achieved by the use of theatrical lighting fixtures as well as dimming control.
Through the use of varying colour temperatures (warm to cool) it enabled the lighting to make strong contrasts between the various areas and elements within the exhibition.
As the exhibition contained a lot of highly sensitive conservation items within glass showcases, a custom designed fibre optic system was developed between DALD and Universal Fibre Optic.
The exhibition was a huge success with over 114,000 visitors.
Electrical & Lighting instillation was by Reed Engineering Services.
