Dubai Feasts with d&b
"The deciding factor was the sound equipment," says Eddie Mulrainey of 3DB Audio, describing what led him to be mixing sound for a prestigious corporate event on the shores of the Gulf. "Though discretion prevents me from naming them, it would be true to say the end client for Dubai local production house DLC was a German company and they knew exactly what they wanted."
DLC's client wanted to host a gala dinner at the foot of the Burj Al Arab, Dubai's world-class landmark hotel on the shores of the Gulf and a spectacular setting by any standards. The dinner was for over 1,000 people accompanied by music and song, and preceded by several keynote speakers. "It was a typical demand," continued Mulrainey, "they wanted a speech system with good vocal intelligibility, and a PA powerful enough to do justice to the musical content. They asked for d&b audiotechnik, we both knew it would fulfil these dual demands, and I had it."
Mulrainey has been in Dubai 12 years, a former freelance sound engineer in the UK he first experienced d&b audiotechnik when working for Wigwam, a connection that is bearing fruit for him once more. "By coincidence Chris Hill from Wigwam has decided to invest in the Gulf. He came over to meet with me and my partner Mike Snape last year and began moving equipment into the region in November last year. I already had d&b C4s and C7s but he's now augmented our inventory of those loudspeakers, and added B2 subwoofers."
Chris Hill was typically ebullient about the venture: "We're shipping him more gear every month," he said enthusiastically, but then reverted to his dry Yorkshire sense of perspective. "We'll just have to see how it goes."
Hill never does anything on a 'see how it goes' basis and things are obviously going well already. "We're currently providing the close court sound reinforcement for the ATP Tennis Tournament out here, using C4s up on towers," added Mulrainey. "This is typical of the work I'm interested in; it's the quality of work that's important."
Besides d&b audiotechnik equipment Mulrainey & Snape have recently added a Midas Sienna to the 3DB inventory and Hill is sending out a pair of Yamaha PM5Ds soon. "It makes sense to me," concluded Hill. "There are some obvious benefits to Wigwam, many of our regular clients like Westlife and Ronan Keating perform out there - so we can support them to our usual standards - and the local market in general appears to be growing."
