Harman’s Martin Releases v3.0 Software for M-Series Range of Lighting Consoles

Just in time for the shipping of Harman Martin’s new flagship lighting console, the M6, Martin has released a new software version for M-Series consoles with hundreds of improvements and a stunning new user-interface, built from the ground up to make programming performances easier and more efficient.

The new v3 software is all about speed with faster start-up time, show loading and more efficient access to functions. The clean and modern user-interface has been optimized for touch and gesture technology, which allows the user to work in an environment where everything is accessible from a single finger touch. Users can simply swipe to move from view to view, access other playback banks quickly or change parameter selection. Double tapping on playback status accesses its functions and options. Additionally, users can enlarge the quick slide out for visual parameter control.

"Our goal for this new interface was to simplify the workflow by giving access to many functions without the need to constantly change views or access sub menus," stated Steven Vanspauwen, head of user experience design, Martin. "Users will find themselves programming faster than they ever did on any console before with v3."

Martin’s M-PC v3 is no longer a simple hardware emulator, but a real PC-based controller with a user-interface optimized for any Windows 7 or Windows 8 PC equipped with or without a touch screen. Using the same concept as the console interface, the M-PC v3 allows anyone to program shows for free. M-PC Free Edition is available for one universe over Artnet as well as the popular ENTTEC DMX devices.

It is also possible to use the M-PC with two universes using any Martin Duo-DMX box. When using its One-Key dongle license, the universe count can be increased to 8 and even 64, making M-PC one of the most powerful lighting PC controllers in the industry.

CAST offers sneak peak at wysiwyg R31

CAST Group has released the first few details of forthcoming new release of wysiwyg R31, which is due to launch within the next few weeks.

R31 is set to deliver an array of stunning new features, enhancements and library additions, many of which were directly requested by accomplished wysiwyg professionals. These improvements will save huge amounts time and money by solving problems and delivering brand new functionality, consistent with CAST's mantra and its steadfast determination to dramatically improve the workflow and user experience of wysiwyg – Release 31 will be testament to this philosophy.

Among the extensive list of the additions to R31 are some striking visualization enhancements – perhaps most significantly the new Material System in Shaded Views, which will allow material properties to be applied on a per-element level to any object in the file, adding more realism to real-time visualization, meaning more screenshots and fewer renderings, therefore saving hours of time. There are also a number of new material properties including: Specular Level, Specular Gloss, Specular Colour Source and Light Reflection, delivering 'really virtually real' images to enhance the creative process. R31 will include the first phase of the Material System, with the second phase projected for completion in R32.

R31 beta-tester Nick Calthrop noted: "Specularity on surfaces is one of the greatest new features R31, because it's all about putting a shine on surfaces in realtime. It really is the bees knees for wysiwyg, one of the biggest things to happen to the software since R25.

Also central to R31 are some spectacular Shaded View enhancements that bring visualisation ever closer to reality. One of the most apparent of these advances is that beams will no longer saturate to white when overlapping in large numbers.

New CAD features will include Line Intersection Snap, Trim & Extend tools for rapid adjustment of lines, and new Dimension Properties & Styles to quickly and easily customize all aspects of dimension objects. The ability to colour, tint and brighten textures, images and videos reduces the need to switch back and forth between wyg and image editing software, while innovative fanning tools speed up the creation of stunning new looks in Design mode – especially useful for users working 'under the gun'.

Fellow beta-tester Daniele Peroni commented: "The updated design and fanning tools are wonderful. I love this software, it's my daily companion throughout all my productions, and it's growing continuously," while Gaël Szpak remarked: "With each new release the designer tools and fanning features look better and better. I've worked for a long time with wysiwyg and I've watched its evolution, It's wonderful."

Collectively, the improvements to wysiwyg in R31 are about productivity and creativity – designed with the end user in mind. For instance, to help cut down on the mouse click count, CAST has introduced floating toolbars to the right click menu, giving instant access to common features and operations. In addition, there are a raft of new keyboard shortcuts, while the 'Insert on Floor' option now included in the Library Browser for automated fixtures eliminates the extra steps previously involved in adding a floor mount, pipe or truss, making the process much more efficient and intuitive. Of course, this is just a small selection of the many improvements made in R31 – expect a whole lot more upon its release later this month.

Bruce Freeman, chairman of CAST Group concluded: "Our aim for each new release of wysiwyg is to use our Members’ input to spawn innovation which keeps them competitive with today’s design and production demands. wysiwyg is a professional’s tool and clearly our Members intend to deploy it to become more professional, more productive and more profitable. We've greased the wheels of the creative workflow and tweaked onscreen visualisation. R31 continues the tradition of raising the bar in the most exemplary way. Wait until they see R32!"
Look out for forthcoming news on wysiwyg

R31, including the official launch date and a full rundown of the new features. Upon release, the R31 update will be available from the Members Only Area of the CAST website where comprehensive product information can also be found. New releases are free for members.

Lab.gruppen Introduces New LUCIA Decentralised Installation Amplifier

Lab.gruppen Introduces New LUCIA Decentralised Installation Amplifier

Putting power and audio processing exactly where it is required, Lab.gruppen has once again redefined expectations and moved into new territory with the launch of its new install dedicated amplifier range, LUCIA.

Addressing the specific needs of the AV contractor market for high quality, localised audio systems, the two-channel LUCIA (Localised Utility Compact Intelligent Amplification) is a compact and versatile Energy Star compliant Class D amplifier platform, packed with the innovative features and superior sonic performance Lab.gruppen has become renowned for. Designed with speed of install and easy configuration in mind, LUCIA combines cutting edge low-impedance amplifier electronics with advanced DSP in the smallest amplifier the company has ever produced.

For small-scale AV applications where high quality audio is required, without the complication and additional cost of a distributed system with centralised rack-mounted amplification, matrixing and processing, LUCIA offers systems designers a more logical and cost-efficient solution, one that is ideally suited for corporate boardrooms, classrooms and small lecture theatres, museum multi-media areas and retail units.

The range comprises four models across two power configurations – 2 x 60W and 2 x 120W – each available with either 4-in, 4-out matrix-mixer and configurable DSP features (LUCIA 120/2M, LUCIA 240/2M) or in a basic 2-in 2-out configuration (LUCIA 120/2 and LUCIA 240/2). While all models are equipped with DSP pre-configured ‘out of the box’ for operation in typical applications, the Matrix variants also facilitate easy setup via USB connection (with Windows and Mac LUCIA configuration software) to unlock the full potential of the processing and mix-matrix to meet specific system requirements.

Featuring classic Lab.gruppen limiters and mastering quality EQ and processing algorithms evolved from TC Electronic’s industry leading System 6000, LUCIA is a true synthesis of TC Group’s technologies – bringing truly exceptional sonic performance to this type of product for the first time. Among other advanced DSP features, the new Enhanced Bass Profile delivers greatly improved LF performance from standard full-range in-ceiling or surface mount loudspeakers, to the extent that the need for a separate subwoofer may be negated – saving both time and cost.

These intelligent amplifiers also benefit from an Auto Load Sense feature, with the device automatically measuring the impedance of a connected loudspeaker load and adjusting itself accordingly to deliver full power, at all impedances (2 – 8 ohm). All LUCIA models also come with intelligent fan control for silent operation at low volumes, and low-noise even at high output when fan is operational.

Klas Dalbjorn, Lab.gruppen’s product research manager for install products said: “LUCIA breaks new ground for Lab.gruppen, at the same time drawing on our knowledge and expertise in powerful, energy efficient amplification. Like E Series, LUCIA is Energy Star compliant, and is built upon proven Class D technology. The ease of install, ease of use and relatively low through-life cost make this a very compelling choice in today’s marketplace.”

Conceivably, each LUCIA model could drive up to 16 speakers on a localized low-impedance system (8 per channel – if the loudspeakers were 16 ohms). Tailor made presets will be available for Tannoy’s commercial loudspeaker ranges, along with additional hardware accessories to provide mounting flexibility.

QSC Introduces Revolutionary Power Amplification Technology Platform

QSC Introduces Revolutionary Power Amplification Technology Platform
QSC Introduces Revolutionary Power Amplification Technology Platform

QSC Audio Products, LLC has announced its revolutionary power amplification technology platform with the introduction of two new amplifier families, the CXD Series for installed sound applications and the PLD Series for portable/live sound reinforcement applications. Featuring advanced signal processing combined with a unique power distribution configuration, PLD and CXD Multi-Channel Processing power amplifiers completely redefine the rack-mount power amplifier category.

“Our new CXD and PLD amps represent a major advancement in amplifier technology and innovation,” says Dale Sandberg, QSC senior product manager, amplifiers. “Not only are they amazing class-D amplifiers with on-board processing, but they change the fundamental amp paradigm with a unique channel combining methodology for much greater flexibility. The benefit of all this is an outstanding new platform that meets the needs of our customers in a whole new way."

“There’s been a misconception that QSC was moving away from power amplifier products and instead focusing our attention on loudspeakers and DSP,” states Gerry Tschetter, VP marketing. “While we’ve seen tremendous success in those product categories in recent years, the fact remains that QSC still builds the best power amplifiers in the market. Our new CXD and PLD amplifiers are a reflection of our use of cutting edge technologies, our deep understanding of DSP and loudspeaker engineering and our legacy of over 40 years of rock solid amplifier design.”

Housed in a 2U rack-mount configuration, CXD and PLD Series amplifiers feature new QSC proprietary class-D power devices, which enable multi-channel, high performance power. The innovative Flexible Amplifier Summing Technology (FAST), provides better power allocation by actively distributing the total amplifier power across one, two, three or all four outputs enabling amp channels to be combined for maximum current or voltage output with the largest models capable of up to 5,000 watts.

With independent DSP processing available for every channel, a preset wizard streamlines the setup process simplifying amplifier configuration and deployment. Advanced DSP includes cross-over filters, parametric EQ, alignment delay and other dynamics processing and when paired with QSC loudspeakers, Intrinsic Correction processing techniques may be employed to ensure optimum sonic performance. The integration of DSP with amplification means that the on-board processor is aware of what the amplifier is doing. This enables the dynamics processing and protection circuitry to be far more accurate and effective. USB interfaces on the rear panels allow firmware updates as well as the ability to upload loudspeaker tunings and configurations and transfer data between amplifiers. Multiple DSP-controlled power saving modes combined with the Class-D design ensure high efficiency, low weight, and economical cost of ownership.

Designed specifically for the needs of integrators, CXD Series amplifiers provide efficient, robust and extraordinarily high fidelity power capable of driving multiple amplifier channels and loudspeaker configurations while simultaneously deploying sophisticated digital processing, all with optimal energy and efficiency. The CXD lineup includes the CXD4.2 (400W at 8 ohms, continuous), the CXD4.3 (625W at 8 ohms, continuous) and the CXD4.5 (1150W at 8 ohms, continuous) with the CXD 4.3 and CXD4.5 able to direct drive 70V and 100V systems. The rear panel features four balanced Euroblock input connectors and four Euroblock touch-proof loudspeaker connectors enabling integrators to terminate wiring before connecting to the amplifier. GPIO located on the rear panel offers additional functionality including a heartbeat output for Life-Safety supervision. In addition to their outstanding efficiency, the CXD amplifiers’ power saving modes further ensure that energy costs will be kept to a minimum over the life of the installation.

PLD Series Amplifiers, designed specifically for portable sound applications, provide efficient, robust and extraordinarily high-fidelity power to drive multiple channels of loudspeakers while simultaneously deploying sophisticated digital processing, all with minimal operational complexity. The PLD line consists of the PLD4.2 (400W at 8 ohms, continuous), the PLD4.3 (625W at 8 ohms, continuous) and the PLD4.5 (1150W at 8 ohms, continuous). The rear panel features four balanced XLR input connectors with loop-thru and six Speakon NL4 loudspeaker connectors for easy setup. The on-board processing is managed via front panel controls with 20 factory settings included for the most common applications. For more customised settings, the included Configuration Wizard helps streamline system setup and configuration. PLD amplifiers combine improved system performance with a wide and flexible range of options for future systems growth.

CXD and PLD Series Amplifiers will be available in July 2013.

Phaser Brings Laser Projection to New Performance Levels

Phaser Brings Laser Projection to New Performance Levels

Osram has for the first time achieved maximum image quality for pure laser-based projection with a combination of laser and phosphor material. The modules with phaser technology do not need to be replaced during the complete service life of the projector. They will be used for the first time in projectors from the end of this year.

Until now only green light was generated via laser with laser-based projectors – LEDs were responsible for the blue and red primary colours. With phaser technology, where ‘phaser’ stands for phosphor and laser, Osram for the first time presents a process which achieves outstanding image quality with projection by the use of laser, made possible by blue laser diodes. The beams of the diodes are focused directly onto a wheel coated with red, yellow and green phosphor. When the wheel rotates the colours are generated in sequence, and rapidly enough to form a uniform image for the human eye. The new projection technology ensures brilliant images on screens with colours that are true-to-life.

The first projectors featuring phaser technology will be launched on the market at the end of the year by a Taiwanese customer of the light manufacturer Osram.

In contrast to standard discharge lamps, the phaser module with a service life of 20,000 hours is as durable as the life of the projector itself. A beamer in offices used for eight hours daily can thus be operated almost seven years long without failure of the light source, whereas relamping for classic discharge lamps is usually required after a quarter of the time.

With phaser projectors, the light is also immediately visible without delay and with complete brightness. A cooling down phase following operation is not necessary. Connected with suitable electronics, the phaser module offers yet another advantage: in contrast to discharge lamps, it can be dimmed from 100% to 0% steplessly and within milliseconds so that brightness is optimally adapted to image content. Light is automatically dimmed for example when dark images are viewed, for example with a horror film.

Luminous flux is comparable to a 180W discharge lamp, and is thus suitable for presentations in offices and schools, for image shows and is also ideal for home cinema entertainment. The expertise for the phaser technology originates from Germany: the optical concept and product development come from Berlin, and the laser diodes from Regensburg.

Amber Bolsters Range with Adjustable Kinetik In-ceiling Speaker

Amber Bolsters Range with Adjustable Kinetik In-ceiling Speaker

EMEA master distributor, Amber International has announced the launch of the new Kinetik Labs KISP-E200-IC speaker. Designed for in-ceiling installations, or other suitable surfaces such as plasterboard walls, the powerful two-way speaker features a pivoting tweeter that provides the user with a more engaging listening experience.

The KISP-E200-IC offers smooth and engaging bass and mid notes, thanks to a rigid 200mm (8 inch) Polypropylene bass/mid driver. The advanced 25mm silk dome tweeter can be adjusted up to 30 degrees off axis and angled in any direction from the centre, thanks to its ball and socket design. This allows installers to optimise listening positions, regardless of location - which simply wouldn’t be possible with a traditional fixed tweeter design.

Further fine tuning of the wide-dispersion speaker is possible via a treble adjustment switch. It can be left in the central position for passive response or switched left or right for a 3 decibel boost or cut of high frequencies. Speaker impedance can also be selected as either 4 or 8 Ohms as required.

"Our Kinetik Labs audio engineers have placed great emphasis on creating a motor and cone structure that performs perfectly, with constant reliability whatever’s being played and regardless of the volume level," says Stuart Tickle, managing director of Amber International. "The choice adjustment through tweeter angle, frequency options and impedance levels can be governed by the acoustic characteristics of the room, or by listener preference. This creates a truly customisable experience, rarely attainable by custom install speakers at such a competitive price."

Alongside speakers, Kinetik Labs incorporates a range of installer-friendly IR kits, cables and versatile brackets for screen mounting.

Robe Cyclone Hits Town with LD Scott Warner

Robe Cyclone Hits Town with LD Scott Warner

Robe takes their policy of listening to what lighting and visual designers are requesting to new levels of commitment with the new Robe ROBIN Cyclone product, which made its US début at the PLASA Focus exhibition in Orlando, Florida last week, following a worldwide launch at Prolight+Sound 2013 in Frankfurt.

Robe collaborated with Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania based lighting designer Scott Warner on this highly innovative product – featuring an integrated fan in the centre of a moving head, surrounded by a ring of 24 high powered individually controllable RGBW multichip LEDs.

Scott was in Orlando on the Robe booth to see the production model Cyclones for the first time and was delighted. “It’s very special to have something you draw and dream about brought to life in this way,” he enthuses.

Scott originally hit on the idea when touring with a client in the UK. He had to move his lights on a daily basis to accommodate the wind machines on stage that were used to cool the artist. Instead of getting grumpy, he had a eureka moment: “Why doesn’t someone make a fan with a light in it!”

A short while later, he met with Robe’s sales director Harry von den Stemmen and mentioned it. Harry was suitably impressed, and then discussed it with Robe’s CEO Josef Valchar who is deeply involved in all Robe’s product development.

Robe decided to run with the idea and less than nine months later, the Robe designers had worked their magic and Scott was looking at the fixture!

Cyclone was chosen as an apt description to represent the power and dynamics of wind as a formidable natural element – a moment that Scott has never forgotten since witnessing his first tornado as a child – when the sky turned an eerie, unforgettable green.

The Cyclone takes ‘strategic hazing’ in a performance environment to new levels of control and sophistication.

Cyclones are also ideal for wafting drapes and softs around the stage and set producing for distinctive and subtle effects, as well as for cooling artists whilst performing in any hot environment – indoors and outdoors – complete with dramatic ‘hair-blowing’ and ‘smoke-through-the-fan’ looks.

The Cyclone’s LEDs have a zoom of 8 to 63 degrees and a strong central airflow can be combined with fog and haze for awesome high quality atmospheric effects.

In addition to that, “It looks really, really cool,” says Scott with pride.

He is absolutely delighted with Robe’s response: “I don’t think any other company would have taken a chance in investing in this product,” he says.

Scott will soon be taking delivery of several Cyclones and using them on the Smokey Robinson tour amongst others. Already, his many LD contacts have expressed an interest. “At this point, it’s not about competition, it’s about assisting my peers with a new and different creative tool.”

The Cyclone’s varispeed fan can be independently DMX controlled starting from a very low RPM and it is a perfect complement to fog and hazers in any live environment needing fine-tuned fog/haze flows, from a mere wisp of smoke to full-on immersive low cloud coverage. The unit also benefits from all the features from Robe’s massively popular LEDWash series.

Harry von den Stemmen comments: "It was an absolute pleasure for us to have a well-known LD on the booth at PLASA Focus Orlando, and someone who is out there working day-to-day on tours, shows and events.”

Scott is hugely passionate about "his" product. At PLASA Focus he talked to many other LDs, brought them to the Robe booth and showed off the Cyclones. His expansive sense of humour made everyone laugh and helped create a great vibe on the booth, where he was somewhat of a rock star himself!

Says Harry: “As often happens with great innovations, Scott just had a rough idea when we visited him in his office in Pittsburgh a few months ago. He said, 'Wouldn't this be a cool idea, can Robe make something like this?' And we said 'Yes we can!' "

Scott has been using Robe fixtures regularly in his work since the 2006 Pussycat Dolls tour. “Robe makes products that LDs want to use – as opposed to what they think that people should be using – and you always feel like your opinion is valued,” he concludes.

To cope with the harsh daily routine of stage life on the road, the adapters must be durable, rugged and reliable. Klotz Cables has put its all into designing a product to meet these challenging standards, finally developing a unique design.

A speakON NLT8 connector has a milled plastic connector sleeve made from high-strength abrasion-resistant thermoplastic POM (polyoxymethylene), within which the four connector channels are divided between four Klotz LY240T cables. The rugged connector sleeve provides protection for the splice points of the individual connections, while a PG29 strain relief element protects the signal conductors from tensile stress. The connector sleeve includes a stainless steel hanging loop which can bear the full weight of the adapter.

This sophisticated adapter design is unique and available only from Klotz Cables.

Audica Professional Launches MULTIzone

Audica Professional Launches MULTIzone

Audica Professional has announced it is expanding its MICROseries audio system capabilities with the launch of the MULTIzone. Applications include retail outlets, bars and restaurants, hotels, education facilities, museums, visitor centres and other public spaces requiring independent zone input and output control.

The MULTIzone is a 4-zone control mixer with 6 music inputs, plus a microphone input for paging. Each of the 4 outputs can be independently configured to provide music from any one of the inputs plus the paging microphone and the relative levels are set by front panel controls. The music is automatically ducked to allow for announcements to be heard clearly. Up to 7 MULTIzone units can be linked for systems of up to 28 zones.

Zone outputs are individually switchable for flat response or Audica loudspeaker EQ, allowing for systems using Audica or any other brand of loudspeaker. A mute control input is provided for connection to fire control systems. This mutes all music inputs whilst keeping the paging microphone active for safety announcements. Remote zone control is possible via optional in-room wired wall control panels or via an RS232 interface. The RS-232 interface allows control of all basic functions of the unit.

The MULTIzone can be used freestanding, or mounted in its included 19-inch rack-mount panel. Balanced and unbalanced outputs are provided for the MULTIzone to partner with Audica’s 4-channel MICROplus power amplifier, or any other unit.

"The design of the MULTIzone is in keeping with all of our MICROseries products", comments Audica’s Derek West. "This means as well as its attractive styling, the front panel controls have been kept to an absolute minimum making it simple for any user; just volume, input select and mic level controls for each of the 4 zones. Only when you look at the rear panel do you see how comprehensive and capable of customisation the unit is for the required application".

ETC debuts Selador Desire D40XTI LED luminaire

ETC debuts Selador Desire D40XTI LED luminaire

ETC's Selador family of luminaires reinvented LED lighting by setting a new standard for colour mixing, light quality, dimming and ease of use. Now ETC is redefining permanent interior and exterior architectural lighting with the introduction of the new Selador Desire D40XTI luminaire.

The D40XTI has the same colour mixing system that Selador luminaires are known for. Using the x7 Color System - which combines up to seven LED colours in one unit - the D40XTI has the most flexible colour rendering possible.

Available in seven different arrays, it can cover any lighting task: Lustr+ is the most adaptable array, producing a range of hues, from deep, saturated colours to rich spectral whites; the Vivid array delivers the boldest colours available from an LED luminaire; fire and Ice dazzle with colour spectrum specific tones; Studio HD offers broadcast-quality variable white light; Studio Daylight and Studio Tungsten provide maximum brightness in punchy cool or warm whites.

The D40XTI also features the Selador family's professional-quality dimming capabilities. The D40XTI can fade to black smoothly, without the tell-tale steps demonstrated by other LEDs.

"The D40XTI was designed with the installer in mind," explains Jim Uphoff, ETC fixtures product manager. "It can be set up in minutes with a few simple connections. It has just two cables: one for power and one for both data in and thru. The DMX/RDM cable simply plugs into an included data board, and the power cord can be permanently wired to a junction box."

A tough, rugged luminaire, the D40XTI is safe for use outdoors in any weather. Says Matt Armendariz-Kerr, ETC entertainment market manager: "The weather-resistant design of the D40XTI makes it the perfect tool to bring out architectural details of a building's façade or to be installed in an outdoor theatre. At the same time, it's rated for interior use, so the D40XTI can handle any long-term indoor installation."

The accessory holder on the D40XTI is a new feature to the Selador line, letting accessories be added, secured or changed in the field. "Diffusers, glass lenses, egg crates and other accessories don't have to be factory installed," says Uphoff. "The D40XTI's sleek trim ring allows access to them without compromising the dustproof/waterproof seal."

DPA Microphones Launches the Ultimate in Podium Microphones

DPA Microphones Launches the Ultimate in Podium Microphones

Internationally acclaimed for creating high quality live sound and recording microphones, DPA Microphones has now turned its attention to the installation market with the launch of two new microphones that give AV installers and conference organisers the clear, transparent and precise sound they demand.

At the top end of the range DPA is offering podium microphones that incorporate the modular capsules from the d:dicate Recording Microphones (formerly known as Reference Standard), which are acclaimed for their

exceptional linear frequency responses, high SPL and superior gain before feedback. These new podium microphones combine the state-of-the-art capsules with newly introduced modular active booms to complete their modular nature. A number of different capsules are available and by choosing the exact capsule and boom combination, DPA customers can access the exact microphone for their needs.

Christian Poulsen, CEO of DPA Microphones, says: "Given the flexibility of our d:dicate range, creating a microphone for the installation and conference markets was an obvious step. We already had the high-end capsule and pre-amplifier technology needed to fulfil the brief, so all we had to do was employ some ingenious mechanical solutions. By doing this, we have been able to adapt our boom and cable technology so that we can deliver high-end installation solutions for a wide variety of applications. Whether this is for a podium, a desk top, a stage stand or even suspended from the ceiling, we have it covered with visually elegant and sonically superior products that boast all the robustness inherent in DPA’s ingenious engineering techniques."

Alongside the high-end d:dicate solution, DPA has also developed a cost-effective, directional podium microphone based on its renowned 4060/d:vote 4099 miniature microphones.

This directional gooseneck microphone, which uses interference tubes and pre-polarized backplate to ensure speech intelligibility, was originally devised for the Nobel Prize organisation. The organisation had requested a dedicated podium solution for its 2012 Nobel Peace Prize presentation, which was taking place in Oslo City Hall, in a room with challenging acoustics. DPA adapted its existing miniature capsule to give an off-axis frequency response that negated room reverberation while preserving the needed on-axis sensitivity for voice level. It also positioned the capsule on a delicate gooseneck stand, which encompasses all that is best in sleek Scandinavian design. The result was so well received that the microphone was quickly adopted as a standard DPA product and is now available to all installation customers. This miniature podium microphone can even be used in a wireless configuration by employing the company’s ingenious adapter range, which is already used for other miniature microphones.

Both of these ingenious solutions for the installation market will be available from August 2013.

New 16 Channel 3G HD Audio Monitors from Bel Hit the Right Price Point

New 16 Channel 3G HD Audio Monitors from Bel Hit the Right Price Point

Bel Digital Audio continues to expand and enhance its range of 16 channel audio and HD video in-rack monitors, with the introduction of the new BM-A1-E16SHD. The all new unit is a compact 1U audio monitor capable of extracting and monitoring all 16 audio channels embedded in two 3G/HD, or SD SDI video streams, plus provides the ability to monitor multiple analogue and digital sources.

The BM-A1-E16SHD features a front panel display to enable rapid configuration of the device and to provide signal status information. Bel has again chosen to permit the selection of inputs to be monitored by use of a simple rotary control on the front panel. This avoids the sometimes time consuming and complex nature of screen driven menus. Selected inputs are then displayed on eight high-resolution multi-coloured LED bargraphs (selectable in two banks for channels 1-8 and 9-16 respectively). Channels 1-8 are also provided as AES-3id and analogue outputs on the rear panel.

Inputs consist of a pair of auto-detecting 3G/HD/SD SDI inputs plus eight analogue audio inputs and four AES-3id pairs. An SDI re-clocked loop-through connector is provided enabling connection to downstream equipment whilst a redundant power supply reinforces the monitor’s high-end broadcast credentials.

The new monitor comes in two versions; one with the optional Dolby decoding facility fitted and the other without. With Dolby decoding enabled, the unit can decode Dolby E, Dolby Digital and Dolby Digital Plus material from any of the AES inputs, or from any embedded audio pair within the SDI bitstreams. Comprehensive metadata reporting is also provided via the front panel display.

Barry Revels for Bel Digital Audio commented “The BM-A1-E16SHD (with Dolby decoding) and the BM-A1-16SHD are both already in full production with units already shipping and we are finding that the monitors are gaining particular favour in installations where rack space is limited and ease of use is a key requirement sometimes as a direct result of that confined space.”

Revels went on to say “We have also been able to hit a really keen price point with these two units whilst maintaining both quality and features and I am delighted to say that has been reflected in the high levels of initial interest we have seen not just from our dealers but from outside broadcast providers and several systems integrators we work closely with.”

QSC Adds New Loudspeakers to AcousticDesign Installation Series

QSC Adds New Loudspeakers to AcousticDesign Installation Series

QSC has announced new additions to the AcousticDesign series of installation loudspeakers. The S8T, S10T and S12 are weather-resistant surface-mount installation speakers suitable for foreground or background sound reinforcement applications. They feature both constant voltage (70V/100V) and low-impedance operating modes.

The new models have been designed with ease of installation in mind. A new mounting solution common to all models, the X-Mount (patent pending), can be fitted on-site during construction. The speaker can be fitted subsequently by simply lifting it on to the mount and locking it in place.

The speakers can be mounted horizontally or vertically, and can be adjusted for pan, tilt and yaw. A grooved ball in the key pivot points allows the speaker’s angle to be adjusted in 7.5º increments – and tick marks on the mount every 15º provide a convenient visual reference.

The short profile (110mm) X-Mount is included in the box, but other possible mounting options are suspension via eyebolts with M10 mounting points, and an optional yoke mount.

The IP54-rated cabinets are made from rugged ABS and are available in black (RAL 9011) or white (RAL 9010), and can be painted.

Positioned at the larger end of the AcousticDesign series, the S8T, S10T and S12 are two-way 8in, 10in and 12in models, with coverage angles of 105º, 90º and 75º respectively. They feature Directivity Matched Transition, QSC’s acoustic design approach that matches the coverage angle of the compression driver to the coverage angle of the woofer at the crossover point. This is claimed to produce remarkably consistent coverage, optimum power response, and smooth, accurate reproduction both on and off-axis.

QSC says that the new models are expected to be available in early June.
