Arup Wins International Information Industry Award
Arup won an International Information Industry Award for ‘innovation in knowledge management’ at an awards ceremony held on 3rd December at the Royal Lancaster Hotel, London.
Arup's Structural Skills Network (SSN) was recognized for delivering best practice to every structural engineer’s desktop in Arup worldwide (1800 engineers in 30 countries). Arup Director and Global Leader of the SSN, Faith Wainwright, collected the award from ITN newscaster, John Suchet, who hosted the event - a glittering occasion with a gala dinner, music and entertainment. More than 500 guests, including senior information professionals, information managers and content managers from around the world, gathered to acknowledge best practices in information and knowledge management.
Arup's SSN is both a virtual community and a real community - it is energised by local and inter-office meetings between structural engineers and an intranet site supports the global access to information.
When the network began many years ago, it captured and distributed technical notes. Now, the network encompasses a wide range of activities and services including: developing and delivering in-house training, providing information and a forum on software packages and user experiences, providing a technical forum where engineers can ask their colleagues around the world for particular experience relevant to their projects, supporting collaboration among younger engineers who are entering competitions, providing up-to-date technical information on issues as diverse as materials, sustainability, design for fire and modular construction, and capturing the stories of value added to different business sectors and projects by structural engineers.
The SSN also fosters emerging networks on specialist areas. It has pioneered a web template for other networks, has been instrumental in developing tools for mapping skills, and the catalyst for new business areas.
Faith Wainwright said: "We are delighted to have been recognized by the information industry. The Structural Skills Network is rapidly becoming the means for supporting Arup structural engineers in their work as they strive to be the best in their field. This award demonstrates our approach to sharing knowledge and delivering value into a business."
