KV2 Produces Ultimate Sound System for HALO in Leeds
Dave Chapman, MD of Blaydon Communications in Newcastle, has just completed a spectacular sound installation for Ultimate Leisure’s new venue Halo in Leeds.
The venue, a large 104-year-old Congregational Church, together with its is adjacent school and caretakers lodge, all built in the Gothic revival style, is located in the immediate vicinity of Leeds University. Its large and open-scale proportions, vaulted ceilings and monolithic stoneware presented scary if fascinating acoustical challenges as well as minor details such as the location of fixings, cable runs and aesthetic sympathies. And just to make it even more interesting was that all the buildings are Grade 2 listed.
The venue, has two areas of operation, the night club (Halo) and the bar / lounge area (Quilted Llama) with plans for a third area in the offing. The ‘Halo’ audio system is configured into five main zones, all completely controllable and addressable via the simple use of a Biamp Audia Flex unit.
Halo comprises of a main bar/open floor area, a dedicated dance floor, a secluded seating area, a large open mezzanine VIP area and a lower bar floor area under the mezzanine. These are all interactive areas that have to provide the highest sound quality at all times regardless of input or operating level. In the ‘Quilted Llama’ a bar and mezzanine area are provided in the part of the development which was formally the Sunday School room.
Whilst the clear intention is to attract the ready-made customer base of students both young and mature, constantly streaming up and down Woodhouse Lane, the site will operate fully through the whole working day, demanding a high degree of flexibility from the audio system in both performance and operation.
To provide such abilities in the Quilted Llama a select and diverse mix of KV2 EX10 and EX2.2 as well as EX2.5 subwoofers are utilised, all active driven and independently controllable as to their location and environment.
A suitable acoustic and aesthetic solution for ‘Halo’ is provided by KV2 Audio ES1.0 and ES2.5 with ES1.8 subwoofers, all controlled from EPAK2500 Amplifiers are utilised in the main open auditorium, bar and open floor area of the venue. The lower bar area, secluded seating area and the mezzanine VIP area all utilize EX10’s.
Dave Chapman summarised the completion of the installation: “The ease of installation and sheer dynamic performance of the KV2 system has certainly opened the minds of many critics as well as the ears of several hundred happy customers.”
Complementing the audio system was the need to cater for the exacting requirements of the DJ’s and the venue catered for either one main DJ in Halo operating to the whole complex or alternatively an independent DJ could operate in the ‘Quilted Llama’. In Halo the DJ is supplied with two Pioneer CDJ 800’s and a Formula Sound FSM600 mixer together with an Oxtron system to provide the video and sound throughout the venue
