Robe at the Coliseum Theatre

The eight Robe Spot 575XT and eight Robe Wash 575XT moving lights are part of a three-phase upgrade to the theatre’s production lighting system undertaken by Enlightenment that has also included the supply of a console and dimmers. It brings the Coliseum’s lighting right up to date.
Robe fixtures were initially suggested to the Coliseum’s chief LX Phil Davies by Enlightenment’s Paul Swansborough. They did a shoot out between Robe and assorted other brands, and Davies made his decision after careful deliberation – and after Robe won the shoot out.
Beforehand, he’d spent a considerable time convincing the theatre’s artistic director of the merits of automated lighting, and that they would greatly enhance productions generally and be a highly flexible, dramatic lighting tool to have at their disposal.
At the top of Davies’ feature wish-list was low fan noise – vital to any theatrical environment. Once the units are rigged in the air, they can’t be heard at all. While the silent operation was impressive, another key selling point for Davies were the three lenses in the 575 Spot. “These offer a great range of angles and the different lenses don't mess-up the optics, which always remain sharp, clean and clear,” he said.
It was the first time Enlightenment has supplied Robe equipment, but it certainly won’t be the last confirms Swansborough, who first saw Robe moving lights in action at the Drum Arts Centre in Birmingham last year.
From the supplier/installers point of view, he explains, Robe offers outstanding quality and value for money. “They were up against some stiff competition for this sale, but the Robes could do everything that the competition could, and more.” Davies agreed: “Both washes and spots are great for any demanding lighting designer needing to achieve multiple and complex looks and effects."
The first Coliseum show to utilize the new Robe units was the acclaimed community production of ‘Neville's Island’.
