Deep Purple Travel the World with Robe

Deep Purple was the first world tour to take these Robe moving lights throughout all territories. They were specified by LD Louis Ball, who started out last year on the extensive European section of ‘Bananas’ with 18 of the first ColorSpot 1200 production models out of the factory, following the fixture’s launch.
For the final UK section of the tour, main lighting contractor PRG asked Robe UK to help source the equipment. Viking Lighting of Norwich & Knight International of Chelmsford both pulled out all the stops to deliver.
After being on the road for over a year, Ball reports that the ColorSpot 1200s are totally reliable. He freely admits to “hammering” them good-and-proper as the core fixtures of the rig, specially the colour-changing and dimming facilities. In 14 months, they didn’t encounter a single problem with any fixture.
Twelve were on the rear truss, used for all the dramatic shaping and beam-work from up high, plus six on the floor, utilised for low-level cross stage lighting, and for throwing graphics onto the backdrop and across the band. “People continually commented on their brightness and features,” Ball enthused.
In the US, NY-based lighting supplier See Factor was so impressed by the performance of the ColorSpot 1200s that they bought a quantity for their hire stock.
Ball’s lists smoothness of dimming, brightness and reliability as his three favourite ColorSpot 1200 features. He also likes the standard gobos, specially the spilt coloured UV/white and red/white options, and he’s looking forward to using the new Robe ColorWash 1200 fixtures as soon as possible.
Deep Purple are currently working on a new album and are scheduled to resume touring in mid 2005.
