Feeling like a Million Dollars with the Arena Group
As Ernie Els picked up his million pound prize money at the 2004 HSBC World Matchplay Championship, VIP guests were caught-up in the excitement as they enjoyed proceedings in luxurious facilities supplied by the Arena Group.
Since being formed in 2000 the Arena Group has become the UK’s largest outdoor event services company. The 2004 HSBC World Matchplay Championship offered the largest matchplay golf prize money in the world and the infrastructure at the Wentworth course for this event benefited from the combined expertise and resources of all four divisions within the group.
The prestigious first World Matchplay took place in 1964 and is now the last of the seasons’ significant golf tournaments in England. Unlike tournaments held in summer months, the HSBC World Matchplay Championship is virtually guaranteed its fair share of inclement weather, and the 2004 event didn’t disappoint. With this in mind the organisers, IMG, contracted the proven resources of the Arena Group to create an environment that reflected the high status of the event and it’s guests.
Arena Group chief executive David Walley said: “This championship is a favourite of the players and golf fans all over the world, having featured the leading international golfers over its 40 years history. We are very proud that IMG entrusted the Arena Group to provide so many elements of this event for the second successive year. The level of compliments received about the high quality of the hospitality is a testament to all of our team.”
Arena Structures supplied a double-deck structure with the ground floor divided off into hospitality areas and on the top floor a bespoke designed facility for HSBC was created. This structure along with others was supported on scaffold supplied by Arena Scene, who also constructed a two-storey hospitality box overlooking the 18th green, used by clients of the events organisers IMG.
Arena Structures MD Grahame Muir commented: “It is great working with a client who has strong design ideas, which enabled us to incorporate corporate colours and logos on to our structures.”
From elsewhere within the group, Arena Events managed the environments within the structures and managed many of the hospitality packages. Arena Seating supplied tiered grandstands giving spectators prime viewing positions over the 14th, 16th and 18th greens. In line with the event’s sponsors branding, they supplied red seating and grey trims matched to HSBC’s corporate identity.
