ADLIB Triumphs Again in 2004 WGAF Challenge Cup

ADLIB Audio’s star five-a-side soccer team clinched the WGAF Challenge Cup from Wigwam Acoustics after a spectacular goal by captain Dave Jones 40 seconds from the final whistle, winning them the competition for the second year running.

The 2004 tournament was staged at the JJB Soccer Dome in Manchester. Five teams participated – ADLIB, AV company MCL, Lite Alternative, SSE and Wigwam KFC.

The first round saw all five teams play each other once, with the bottom team emerging wooden spoon winner. This year it was the only team representing the lampie world - Lite Alternative - who put up the most abysmal performance and were beaten by everyone. The remaining three teams all lost to SSE who seemed to be the team with the form this year. With the others all finishing on 5 points, goal difference decided who played who, which turned out as SSE playing Wigwam and ADLIB playing MCL.

Despite having a semi-professional player onboard and scoring 12 goals in the qualifiers, SSE were thrashed 4-0 by Wigwam, beaten by teamwork and overall fitness. ADLIB looked like they were cruising to a comfortable 3-0 victory over MCL, when the corporate event specialists fought back to equalise, and the game ended in a draw, leaving a penalty shoot out to decide who would face Wigwam in the final.

MCL fluffed their first shot, and ADLIB blasted all three of theirs’ home to go through.

Dave Jones knew his men had the capacity for a fight, but also knew they were no match for the fitness levels of the Wigwam squad, who practice weekly. ADLIB also had two injured players on the field. An early goal saw Wigwam take the lead, and it seemed they would power through to clinch the title despite a spirited defence from ADLIB. Then, just three minute’s before time, ADLIB’s Ian Greenwood unexpectedly equalised - and promptly collapsed from his injury.

This stirred that famous Scouse spirit into action and despite being a man down, ADLIB fought back with massive determination, resulting in Jones’ last minute goal - and ending Wigwam’s dreams of the trophy!

In his acceptance speech, Dave Jones praised all teams for their great sportsmanship, and Wigwam for being tough opponents. Lite Alternative gracefully accepted their wooden spoon, and then all went on to enjoy an evening of ebullience and extended social interaction in Manchester
