Finchley ArtsDepot Opens with Moveable Midas

Chris Baldwin, from Cambridge-based ACT Consultant Services, has been the theatre designer for this project, and was responsible for specifying the Midas front-of-house control and the Meyer sound reinforcement system. "The quality of the desk is quite outstanding," he says, "and my opinion was shared by Peter Bingham, the Head of Operations at the artsdepot. It impressed us with its flexibility and suitability for different applications."

The Pentland Theatre, with a striking interior of deep reds, maple wood and stainless steel rails, is every part an adaptable theatre which can provide for traditional seated presentations to flat-floored and standing functions. The Midas Verona stays on the move. Conventionally, the control room can be acoustically separated from the hall, or the desk itself can be pushed out into the auditorium to share the same acoustic space as the audience.

The Midas Verona was supplied by Marquee Audio through audio and video contractors RK Sound Engineering from St.Albans, responsible for all the speech reinforcement and main PA systems at the venues. The Pentland has also been equipped with a central cluster of Meyer UPA-2P, with UPM-1Ps for sidefills. Left and right of stage are Meyer CQ-1s. Marquee Audio supplemented the venue’s sound reinforcement core with some additional Meyer speakers, namely a pair of the new 700-HP subs and a selection of floor monitors.

Events in the artsdepot's first season include a concert by world renowned percussionist Evelyn Glennie featuring the star of UK garage MJ Cole; jazz man and band leader Humphrey Lyttelton; direct from the West End, the award-winning 'Stones in His Pockets'; flaming hot flamenco steps and virtuoso guitar playing from Paco Peņa Dance Company; Al Murray's hilarious comic character show 'The Pub Landlord: Giving it Both Barrels'; 'The Owl and the Pussycat' during half term and a longer run of 'Pinocchio' over Christmas for children.
