Talk Events Come Into Bloom for BALI
When BALI (British Association of Landscape Industries) wanted something special for this year’s National Landscape Awards ceremony, they contracted Talk Events to create the prestigious event.
The BALI Awards ceremony was held at the Royal Lancaster Hotel in London this November, with more than 500 guests from the Landscape Industry attending the event. Gardening television presenter and Chelsea Flower Show gold medallist Chris Beardshaw presented awards over 13 categories, and the most prestigious award of the competition, the BALI Grand Award.
The Talk Events team were approached to design the entire production of the show, including installing the AV equipment, sound system, lighting rig and staging, script writing, video multi media production, crew and bringing fresh new ideas to the ceremony that had not been previously implemented.
The ceremony’s theme was created using an 8m x 3m stage and star cloth set with twin projection screens inset. Talk Events worked closely with the sponsors of the event, which included JCB Groundcare, Honda and Marshalls plus others to create a large 8ft x 8ft graphic panel incorporated into the set featuring the sponsor’s logos. This ensured the brands were represented well to the guests and further smaller graphic panels surrounded the stage edge to maximise the sponsor’s coverage. Two 7ft topary trees worth over £1000 each brought a landscaping feel to the stage.
Six 42” plasma screens were flown above the guests, along the length of the room ensuring everyone could view the live images and on-screen multi media designed and edited by Talk Events. The screens helped to create a fantastic visual effect for the event.
With twelve months of preparation and planning for the evening, no idea was left undiscovered. Talk Events provided the judges with DV cameras so that they could take footage of the entrant’s projects whilst visiting them. After the winning projects had been chosen, this footage, together with digital photos, were combined to create the onscreen multi media visual effects. After the winning projects were chosen, Talk Events met with the judges to collate information in order to write the voice over script and script for Chris Beardshaw. The script covered the background information on the nominees in each category and video edits and voice over material was also produced to promote the sponsors of each award across the duration of the evening.
Gary Piper of Talk Events commented: “We wanted to think of new ideas that we could bring to the event to make it stand out from previous years, which is why the live edits of the winning projects worked really well. It meant the guests could see why the judges had picked the winners.”
A lighting rig comprising Parcans, MAC 250s and MAC 300s, along with a mixture of profiles and Fresnels, was designed by the team and contributed to a great atmosphere throughout the afternoon.
The afternoon ran smoothly due to the ten experienced technicians including a camera crew working hard behind the scenes. Talk back systems enabled the show caller to simultaneously cue each music sting, lighting sequence and vision mix, and the overall professionalism of the production led to a successful and enjoyable event.
Daljeet Billing, BALI operations manager said: “BALI tasked Talk Events to come up with something different for this year’s event and they did not disappoint. Their innovative design of the whole production of the ceremony surpassed all our expectations. Our guests and sponsors were really impressed and I am sure the ceremony will be an industry event that will be remembered for a very long time.
