FX Rentals Help Out in a Jam
FX Rentals was recently called upon to provide a system of 10 Tascam DA88 and DA98 8-track hard disc recorders for Jam DVD, which specialises in portable live recording and DVD production.
Julie Gardner, who runs Jam DVD, had been asked by Sony Music to record a gig the following day at the Shepherds Bush Empire by Fame Academy contestant and British R&B star Lemar. She took the unusual step of linking 12 of the Tascam recorders, including two of her own DA88s, together to provide 96 digital channels.
"My set up records up to 32 channels, which is normally plenty even if the channel list is higher, as things can often be grouped to record instruments that play at different times to the same tracks," says Gardner, who was working in Birmingham when she received the call. "But given time limitation it was easiest to just take a straight feed as there was no time to plan anything."
Given Lemar’s line up, this was a wise precaution. "The band consisted of three keyboard players, one drummer and a separate, very complex percussion set up that also included drums, plus guitar, sax, bass and seven vocalists," she continues. "As my system is a carry in system, I still needed something which was very portable and the Tascams are the obvious choice; there are no problems with syncing the machines together and they are very reliable which is the most important thing. I have tried using
other hard disc recorders as a backup system, but found they couldnıt cope with what I was doing."
Although Gardner owns a good deal of equipment for live recording work, she frequently calls upon FX Rentals to supplement her set up depending upon the project. "The people who work at FX actually operate the machinery they hire out too, and really know what they are talking about, so if you have any problems you can ring them up and they help you out," she says. "At the moment Iım also working on a live DVD for Busted, mixing in stereo and 5.1 surround, and for this project Iım hiring a Doremi V1 video disk recorder from FX so that I can mix sync to picture.
