Joe Lights Up R&B World with LXCO

Neither Joe or LXCO are household names, but for the dedicated fans that snapped up tickets for their recent sell-out UK tour, they both created a great atmosphere at every show.

US R&B star Joe’s status with music fans generated three sell-out gigs when he came to the UK, which then prompted an additional fourth and final sell-out show. Joe played at the Birmingham NIA, Manchester Apollo and the Hammersmith Apollo from 24th – 27th March. The US favourite, who has worked with the likes of Barry White, Tina Turner and Mariah Carey across his ten year music career, performed a dynamic set, bringing the audience to their feet from the first beat.

LXCO, in conjunction with DLD, provided a lighting rig that fitted a show that moved from pumping grooves to gentle acoustic ballads. LXCO’s lighting designer, Mark Wheatley, liaised with the tour’s musical director prior to the show to discuss the lighting requirements for the tour.

Two straight 40ft trusses incorporated Parcans, ACL’s, Source Fours and 18 MAC 500 and 600’s into the lighting rig and Mark controlled them using a Ventura console. Due to the position of the front truss at Hammersmith and Manchester, there was no way of lighting the front section of the stage, so two followspots were employed. Two MACs lit the dancers with cross-lighting set up from the floor across all the venues. Mark incorporated black gauze as a backdrop for the stage, which effectively produced a double image and added to the aesthetic of the show.

Production manager Al Grey commented: “I have been more than pleased with the look of the show. It incorporates four dancers and a live band and as such is a very visual production. Effective lighting was vital and Mark delivered what was needed.”
