LXCO Shine for The Lord’s Taverners
LXCO supplied the lighting for The Lord’s Taverners all-star charity concert at the Royal Albert Hall this March.
The ‘One Generation 4 Another’ concert provided an evening to remember, with a line up that included Eric Clapton, Sir Bob Geldof, Jools Holland, Sam Brown and Bill Wyman’s Rhythm Kings amongst others and raised more than £150,000 for The Lord’s Taverners charity.
The logistics for the event required an early morning load-in into the venue and the production set up had to be executed quickly and efficiently, leaving maximum time for technical preparations and rehearsals for the show. LXCO designed a lighting rig that could be installed quickly, with the flexibility to suit the lighting requirements of the different artists and ensure the stage backdrop, featuring the ‘One Generation 4 Another’ logo was lit throughout the show. LXCO incorporated MAC 500 and 600’s, Parcans and Source 4’s into the rig, ensuring they could provide for the requests of the artists.
LXCO’s lighting designer, Mark Wheatley, discussed lighting with the artists, and their preferences all erred towards the subtle, with most artists requesting static looks. Mark said: “Given that none of the artists wanted ‘flashing’ lights I was able to pre-program a selection of looks on the Ventura console and then fine tune things on the day. Given the time constraints, I was pleased that the l trend was for less rather than more and this meant I could create some nice looks to complement the feel of the song.”
Mark’s previous experience working with some of the artists also ensured their confidence in his work. He commented: “This was a challenging show with the set up, rehearsals, lighting design and show all in the same day and only one chance to get everything right, so changes were being made right up until the show began. I have to say the whole production team worked together very well and it seemed the level of professionalism and mutual respect meant that we all pitched in to create a good show for the incredible rosta of artists.”
With some of the industry’s greats performing the show’s emphasis was the music, so LXCO designed the rig to suit the range of music styles performed on the night and delivered effective visuals that did not take the attention away from the performers. Incorporating minimal movement during the numbers Mark used the Macs to create a range of lighting scapes with some real time desk operating adding that ‘little extra’ to the great sets performed on the night.
