Pitching Into The West End with DHA Lighting
After almost 20 years at London's Palace Theatre, the international smash-hit musical Les Misérables has moved to its new London home at the Queen's Theatre.
Given the chance to re-think his Tony-award winning design for the show, lighting designer David Hersey has retained the light curtains which have been at the heart of every one of the show's many world-wide versions. However, he has decided that lateral movement might also prove useful and so has turned ten of the shows 17 DHA Digital Light Curtains into Pitching Digital Light Curtains.
The 'light curtain' - an intense sheet of light created using strips of narrow-angle lamps - is a lighting tool that lighting designers have been using for many years, with David Hersey using the technique to particular effect on shows including Nicholas Nickleby and the original productions Les Misérables and Miss Saigon, the latter productions motorising the light curtains to give controllable up and down stage movement.
In 1991, for the New York production of Miss Saigon, DHA Lighting created the Digital Light Curtain, an integrated unit offering smooth, accurate movement and a built-in colour scroller. The DLC has since been seen on a huge range of shows world-wide, and the units were retro-fitted to the London and New York productions of Les Misérables some years ago.
The Pitching Digital Light Curtain, which adds side-to-side movement, was created in 1993 for the Canadian production of Showboat lit by Richard Pilbrow. Its addition to the new Les Misérables rig promises to add a host of new possibilities to the show's classic lighting design.
The Digital Light Curtains and Pitching Digital Light Curtains (a combination of six-lamp and eight-lamp units), as well as two DHA Digital Beamlight 2s, are being supplied to the new production by London rental company White Light. DHA Lighting will also be supplying the new production with numerous metal gobos, as well as the Pani slide used to project the show's logo.
