Projected Image Digital at The Broadcast Production Show
At the Production Show 04, PID will launch PixelMAD, a revolutionary matrix control system that loads digital images and plays them back as Quicktime movies via DMX-controlled lighting fixtures. PID is the worldwide distributor of this dynamic new product.
The full range of D-TEK industries’ new D-Series products will also be on show, including the D-Switch, D-Switch Pro, D-Mix and D-Mix Pro – all of which have been developed to give lighting designers and directors the power and flexibility to control the video elements of a show. PID will also show the High End Systems Catalyst digital media server – recently seen in action on the National Lottery “Jet Set”, and the IRAD RADlite digital media server.
VersaTILE is an award-winning new modular LED tile system using low res video images to create a dramatic and broad spectrum of colours. It’s just been previewed on the BBC’s “Eurovision : Make Your Mind Up” show.
PixelMAD is a software tool that loads images and plays them back as Quicktime movies via any DMX lighting fixtures. It was first used on Radiohead's 2003 ‘Hail To The Thief’ world tour 2003, to generate dynamic and organic lighting effects across a wall of James Thomas Pixelline fixtures. This saved hours of laborious programming.
PixelMAD utilises software that runs on a Macintosh in a very similar way to the Catalyst digital media server from High End Systems – also distributed by Projected Image Digital. Screen pixels are converted to DMX values and sent to DMX controlled LED or conventional lighting fixtures, using the Artnet Ethernet DMX protocol. PixelMAD will be available in a number of different configurations, from a 2 universe version to a 40 universe version – to suit shows of all budgets.
The D-Switch unit is the first in a series of innovative new products from D-Tek Industries, exclusively distributed by Projected Image Digital. The D-Series products have been developed to give lighting designers the power and flexibility to control the video elements of their show.
The D-Switch unit switches four synchronized (genlocked) video signals to a single video output via DMX512 lighting control protocol. Four video sources e.g. video sources, DVDs, or cameras, can be switched between, and output to, a single video feed going to a video projector or LED wall. The switching is controlled by a DMX512 lighting console using only a single channel to select between the user’s four video sources and black out. The unit also features a manual selection mode and an automatic chase function. The standard D-Switch unit is a Composite Video and S-Video unit. Component Video and Serial Digital Interface (SDI) will be released shortly.
The D-Switch Pro unit is the second new D-Tek Industries unit enabling lighting designers to have the power and flexibility of controlling the video elements of their show. It allows the switching of four synchronized (genlocked) video signals to four video outputs via the DMX512 lighting control protocol. Four video sources - videos, DVDs or cameras - can be switched between, matrixed to, and output to four video feeds - either projectors or LED walls. The switching is controlled by a DMX512 lighting console using 4 DMX channels to select the four video outputs from the four sources, plus a black out function. The unit also features a manual selection mode and an automatic chase function. The standard D-Switch Pro is a Composite Video and S-Video unit, and Component Video and Serial Digital Interface (SDI) units will be released soon.
D-Mix works in exactly the same way as the D-Switch unit, but with the additional ability to mix and cross-fade any two of the video inputs to the output. It is perfect for smooth cross-fading between multiple cameras and video graphic sources, and outputting to a single device, e.g. a projector or an LED wall. The unit is frame-buffered and synchronises all inputs, therefore it doesn’t require synchronised (genlocked) inputs.
The D-Mix Pro gives users the best of both the D-Switch Pro and the D-Mix units, giving the ability to switch, mix and matrix four video inputs to four video outputs. D-Mix Pro is perfect for using with multiple sources and outputs, such as a number of Digital Media Servers and multiple projectors or screens.
All The D-Switch and D-Mix units may be daisy chained, linked, networked or looped together to create any type of video switching mixing and matrixing network.
VersaTILE turns ordinary spaces into visually mesmerizing environments, where walls and floors can come alive with colours, patterns and moving images. Versa TILE’s flexibility enables the creation of a myriad of different moods, from subtle and ambient to intense and pulsating. Each tile is edge-lit by LEDs, giving a smooth light output. Like building blocks, tiles can be placed together in any configuration. Proven LED video display technology lets VersaTILE produce a broad spectrum of rich, saturated colours – in addition to flesh tones, browns, greys and other colours normally unachievable with conventional lighting technology.
Projected Image Digital is the UK distributor for the Catalyst digital media server from High End Systems and the RADlite from IRAD. The company has been at the forefront of this recent cutting edge trend. Both systems are being used to run video from DMX lighting desks for an increasing number of tours, live events and TV shows. The rise of the digital media server reflects the increasing creative and practical convergence between the mediums of lighting and video in many professional applications.
Two Catalyst digital media servers were used to create stunning video backdrops on the most recent series of the National Lottery ‘Jet Set’ show, with lighting designed by Mark Kenyon.
