Audiotek Choose Pixel Pars from L.E.D. for New Hard Rock Bar Concept

When Hard Rock Café International selected Bristol to unveil their new Bar concept, they again commissioned Cadmium Design — their interior specialists — to conceive the new blueprint, working alongside audio visual experts, Audiotek.

Part of the brief from Cadmium was for a moving light ceiling to highlight the black and white artworks in the triangular-shaped building. Since the listed building boasts two giant window frontages and the backlit feature was to sit in the centre of the modern interior, Audiotek’s Santi Arribas felt an LED approach offered a more dynamic solution to conventional par cans.

After showing the colour changing attributes of the James Thomas Pixel Par 87 LED Lanterns, he specified 16 of the fixtures from distributors Lighting Effects Distribution. These highlight the photo montage (depicting rock legends), which overhang the horseshoe-shaped bar in a 10m x 2m rectangle, and are controlled from a PC Brain.

Explaining the application in the 300-capacity city centre bar, Santi states: “On either side ot the canvas there is a truss on which the Pixel Pars are mounted, allowing the canvas to glow in a constant colour-change throughout the day and night.

“We had seen them in use in another venue, Pangaea, and liked them immediately. They are nice reliable effects — and at more competitive price than equivalent brands. On top of that I like the back-up that Ian Kirby offers at Lighting Effects Distribution.”

This is Audiotek’s first installation for the Hard Rock, and at the same time they have carried the sophisciated use of networked technology and audio and visual transfer via computers to the next level.

Cadmium Design have been working for the Hard Rock for two-and-a-half years. Said Cadmium’s Paula Reason: “Bristol is very much geared up to the local marketplace — a smaller, flexible model with a modern bar approach, an improved menu and more sophisticated cocktail and wine list.

“Hard Rock have maximised the bar area and reduced the merchandising and back-of-house areas, while at the same time making efficiencies to the kitchens. It’s a very slick, all-day operation (commencing at 9am), and the mood can be programmed for the different trading periods. The colour-changing images are pivotal in creating the wow factor and maintaining the atmosphere.”

Steve Inwood, HRC international’s director of European development, states that the Hard Rock Bar has been developed as a logical brand extension to support the network of larger Cafes throughout the major cities of Europe. The concept leverages on the established recognition of the Hard Rock brand and its reputation for friendly service, good food and a strong music offering.
