Minister listens to Concerns over New SIA Legislation

Showsec’s Mark Harding and the GMB Unions’ Ken Vincent led a delegation that met with the Secretary of State for Trade and Industry, and Minister for Woman and Equality, the Rt Hon Patricia Hewitt, to raise their shared concerns over the incoming SIA regulations affecting the security and crowd management industry.
The meeting signified the breadth of concern across the country as the worries of both employers and employees were voiced. As well being the MD of Showsec, with over 2,000 employees, Mark Harding also represented the views of the UK Crowd Management Association (UKCMA), which is made up of security and crowd management companies.
He drew attention to the many practicalities not resolved, such as the timescale for the SIA to carry out effective accreditation, the predicted shortfall in staff achieving the standards, the absence of enforcement standards and the lack of adequate training programs for staff.
The GMB Union, with over 700,000 members, also voiced the concerns of the effects caused by rushing in the new legislation on the staff working in the industry.
Mark Harding commented: “Whilst there is overall agreement for the need for legislation to maintain and improve standards within the security industry sector, we all expressed deep concerns to the Secretary of State over the SIA timetable to introduce the new legislation. We believe there will be potential problems if the SIA sticks to its’ current timetable introducing this legislation in 2004.”
The Rt Hon Patricia Hewitt will now consult other government departments before reporting back to Showsec and the GMBTU with her comments and recommendations.
