Setting Sail for a Voyage to Remember

Setting Sail for a Voyage to Remember

The Royal Navy has announced their programme for Trafalgar 200, a series of events commemorating Lord Nelson’s famous victory. A highlight of the series of events will be The Portsmouth International Festival of the Sea 2005.

Since being established in 1996, The International Festival of the Sea has grown to become Europe’s greatest maritime celebration and it will be returning to Portsmouth on 30th June – 3rd July, 2005. The Portsmouth International Festival of the Sea (PIFOS) 2005 is produced in partnership with the Royal Navy and will be proceeded by the first fleet review since 1977, and with other Naval celebrations, will create a whole week of maritime events in Portsmouth.

PIFOS 2005 is expected to attract a quarter of a million visitors to Portsmouth to experience a range of interactive maritime culture including exhibitions, displays, 12 hours of live music, street theatre and maritime art. The 2005 event will draw on the successes of previous events, also bringing together sailors, yachts, war ships, tall ships and boats from across the globe, to create the greatest fleet seen in home waters for many decades.

Having been involved with the event since it began, the PIFOS managing director Mike Richmond has years of experience to help overcome the challenge of transforming the operational HM Naval Base, Portsmouth into a spectacular festival site. He said: “The six days in the Solent represents a major undertaking for the events industry. The festival, as the flagship event, is already in advanced planning stages. Following the Royal Navy’s official launch our festival team can now pursue dialogue with potential sponsors, commercial partners and start booking suppliers and performers.”

Mike continued: “We are extremely pleased to be staging such a prestigious event in partnership with the Royal Navy. I look forward to working with a range of suppliers and developing new ideas to create an innovative event that will make this celebration memorable.”
