Three-Continent Success for Turbosound's New High-Efficiency Aspect

Turbosound reports an extremely successful response to its new four-model Aspect series, following the highly innovative sound reinforcement system's three-continent launch during recent weeks. Previewed in the USA at the 2004 NSCA Systems Integration Expo in Las Vegas, Turbosound's Aspect series had its major world launch at Prolight+Sound 2004 in Frankfurt, with the Asia Pacific market being covered at Entech 2004 in Sydney, Australia.
Incorporating many patented concepts, Turbosound's Aspect series is the most efficient loudspeaker design the company has ever released - capable of generating peak SPL in excess of 146dB with very low distortion - while the system's Polyhorn waveguides attracted considerable interest and curiosity across the three events. The Polyhorn concept is employed for the high frequency and high-mid frequency bands, and consists of equal-path-length, multi-section waveguides, which create a phase-coherent wavefront. Turbosound's unique design allows individual wavefronts to coincide seamlessly with the physical curvature of an array, minimising comb-filtering effects between adjacent cabinets. The Polyhorn technology is responsible for the system's tightly focused point-and-shoot directivity, making it intuitively adaptable to a huge range of room-size and audience-coverage requirements, with easy scalability from small clubs and auditoria, to the largest arenas and stadia.
Martin Reid, marketing director of Turbosound Ltd, commented: “We could not have asked for a better response to the launch of our Aspect series - with the same high level of positive reactions across the Australian, European and US markets. The combination of the ingenious Polyhorn waveguides, the design of the integral flying hardware, and the rationalised transportability - together with the design's sound quality and efficiency - all contribute to its appeal. The system's scalability, and the straightforward four-product series, enables the widest range of projects to be handled by the simplest inventory. We will be in full production in early summer, and look forward to meeting the already high level of demand.”
Don McConnell, from Turbosound's Australian distributor Audio Telex, reported on Aspect's Asia Pacific debut at ENTECH 2004: "A lot of our customers came to the show specifically to see Aspect and no-one walked away disappointed. We had a good mix of current Turbosound users - who were interested to see what's new - as well as users of other brands. All were very pleased to see that Aspect was neither another 'me-too' product, nor a line-array. Aspect is impressive enough on paper, but nothing beats listening to the system, and this is when people's interest really picked up. Some couldn't stop talking about the smooth midrange and HF, others were blown away by the brick-wall dispersion, and some just loved the performance from such a compact system. As a direct result of Aspect's appearance at Entech, we are now in discussions with a number of key touring and hire companies."
In addition to the Polyhorn waveguides, the Aspect series' patented concepts include a set of in-house-designed transducers operating over four individual frequency bands, divided between the system's modular mid-high and low frequency enclosures. All the transducers utilise high-stability neodymium magnet structures, to offer greater efficiency and thermal stability, together with lower power compression and a reduction in overall weight. The dimensions of the identically sized mid-high and LF enclosures have been carefully chosen to optimise truck packing in US and European vehicles, while the integral flying hardware enables the boxes - with their
rotatable mid-high section - to rig horizontally or vertically. Although integral to the box, the flying hardware can be removed quickly for independent safety testing, and also allows systems to be safely and easily ground stacked. The design of the rigging hardware enables four cabinets to be pre-assembled on a wheel dolly for faster and easier loads-ins.
There is a four-model line-up in Turbosound's Aspect series. The TA-880H - trapezoidal mid-high Designed for installation, as well as ground-stacked touring, applications, the tri-amped TA-880H is equipped with two high frequency drivers on an HF Polyhorn, a single 10” high-mid driver on a HMF Polyhorn, plus two horn-loaded 10" low-mid drivers. The TA-880H is a trapezoidal cabinet, with side angles optimised for correct horizontal array performance, and its integral flying system consists of rigging swords that pass through the box, taking the entire load of a column through load-tested steel components.
The TA-880L is a low frequency very compact 2 x 15” horn-loaded bass enclosure, which matches the trapezoidal mid-high and is recommended for ground-stacked touring as well as permanent installs.
TheTA-890H - touring mid-high unit is designed to be flown in point-source arrays for both large- and small-scale touring, the TA-890H houses two high frequency drivers on an HF Polyhorn, a single 10” high-mid driver on an HMF Polyhorn and two 10” low-mid drivers in a horn-loaded enclosure. The mid-high section is easily rotatable through 90° within the cabinet and, together with the integral flying hardware, this allows the touring box to be flown in a vertical or horizontal orientation, to suit the coverage required for a particular venue.
The TA-890L is a 2 x 15” touring LF enclosure designed to partner the TA-890H touring mid-high, and is equipped with an integral flying system that allows it to be flown horizontally with TA-890H systems. In common with the mid-high cabinet, up to four cabinets can be pre-assembled on a wheel dolly to simplify load-ins and transportation.
