Trantec PT1 Enables Access on Move for Sensory Disabled.
In October 2004 new legislation in the form of the Disability Discrimination Act (DDA) will come into force requiring theatre venues and all public spaces to make facilities available for patrons with sensory disabilities. Trantec say their PT1 is one of the only products available offering a flexible radio based solution to the complex issues surrounding this new legislation.
The DDA requires that theatre venues should be able to provide subtitles or captioning and signed performances for hearing impaired patrons and audio description for partially sighted and blind patrons. The key to the solution is to offer dual-channel systems either through Infrared or radio frequency based systems, which can simultaneously transmit hearing reinforcement to the hard of hearing, and audio description through discrete headsets to the sight impaired person.
As a radio-based product as opposed to infrared, the PT1, originally designed for multi-channel use in gymnasiums and fitness centres, realises huge potential for the sensory disabled in a theatre venue, giving them complete freedom to move around the venue without any loss of audio continuity. The users can enjoy a drink at the bar and sit in any seat in the auditorium, whilst listening to the show’s transcription and programme material providing that the venue has sufficient R.F. coverage.
Installation is quick and very simple, the old problem of infrared blind spots in venues can be eliminated, as is the use of long cable runs to install Infrared emitting radiators at inconvenient positions to enhance coverage is no longer necessary. The PT1 can be programme to work with up to 32 channels or as few as one, final configuration would be decided by the venue in consultation with the installer, depending on local frequency allocations. For instance, select Channel 1 to transmit hearing reinforcement, whilst Channel 2 maybe selected for an audio description.
Designed and manufactured to the highest specifications at Trantec’s South London HQ, the system not only offers broadcast quality sound on the move, but as a “wireless” system it is simple to install and can be maintained very efficiently, without disrupting the daily operating routine of a facility.
