AES Surround Sound Production Seminars an Outstanding Success

The ‘Understanding Surround Production’ seminars, presented jointly by DTS, Genelec, Soundfield and Steinberg, throughout the AES Convention at Messe Berlin, were an outstanding success with over 300 people attending the ten seminars, and many more having to be turned away.
The seminars, featuring presentations on aspects of surround sound production techniques and technologies for music, by various representatives of the participating companies, and featuring a guest spot and Q&A with leading mix engineer Nathaniel Kunkel, were heavily oversubscribed. Tickets for most sessions were fully allocated before each presentation.
Commenting on the success, Lise Hannibal, director of marketing for DTS Europe, stated: "It's an almost impossible task to gauge just how popular events like this are likely to be, and while it was unfortunate we had to turn so many people away, it was also important to achieve a certain level of quality, and to give the sessions an intimate vibe. The level of interaction during the Q&A was indicative of our having achieved that.
"To all of those who participated, a very big thank you, especially Nathaniel who injected so much of his personal enthusiasm for his work and music into the sessions. And to those who missed out, our apologies and look out, we'll be staging these seminars again at the earliest opportunity."
Presentations at the seminar were given by Rodney Orpheus and Jeff Levison from DTS Entertainment, on various aspects of content delivery for music and music video on DVD; Pieter Schillebeeckx from SoundField, with a technical overview of the company's multi-capsule microphone systems and how these are used in recording and post-production environments; Martin Stahl from Steinberg, on editing and mixing for surround productions using a computer based DAW such as Steinberg Nuendo; and Andrew Goldberg of Genelec, on the subject of speaker placement and room design for professional surround sound production environments.
