DALD Lighting for Manchester Science

David Atkinson lighting design (DALD) has just completed the lighting design for Landesign of the new science gallery at the Museum of Science & Industry Manchester. The gallery that focuses on key scientific developments and breakthrough by some of Manchester’s leading scientists of their day.

With a need for visitor flow and return, Landesign’s key strategy for designing the science gallery was to introduce a reverse timeline

(2004 - 1800) - World issues on one side, with local context on the other. In this compressed gallery, the scale and effect of the lighting fixtures was to play an important integral part of the exhibition.

The central double-sided timeline wall incorporates exhibits as well as a graphics. David chose to light the graphics locally by long 22 metre runs of linear fluorescents attached to the top of the wall (Aktiva B-Line) as well as remotely from track fittings. The track fittings were based on the Antatres Mini Farretto with a custom onboard dimmer, toughened coloured glass filters as well as a shortened stem due to the low ceiling height. Within the wall conservation grade showcases are illuminated by Fibre optic accent heads which were supplied by Universal Fibre Optics.

Four enclosed spaces refered to as ‘holodecks’ highlight Manchester’s most eminent Scientists: Dalton, Joule, Lovell and Rutherford. Each ‘holodeck’ has a small entrance canopy which is back lit by sleeved T5 fluorescent to help give a separation from the main exhibition. Within the spaces a dark blue hue of colour is created by recessed Encapsulite fluorescents. Accent lighting comes from Delta Light’s AR70 fixtures suspended centrally. Conservation grade exhibits are lit by a combination of LED and fibre optic sources.

The final area consists of a moving overhead conveyor system exhibiting various objects which are lit from lighting track with the Antares Mini Faretto’s. Dramatic silhouettes of the moving objects can be viewed outside the exhibition through a translucent glass wall. To create the intensity for the silhouettes Iguzzini ‘Parallel’ floods and 150w CDM-T Spotlight fixtures were used from high and low level.

Fixtures have been supplied by AC Lighting, Aktiva, Delta Light, Iguzzini, Lightworks and Universal Fibre Optics.
