Julian Lloyd Webber Goes With AKG

Harman Pro UK has supplied Julian Lloyd Webber, one of the world’s leading classical cellists, with AKG microphones for new band project - ¡Bossa Nova!
Over the last few years Lloyd Webber has been assembling exactly the right musicians for ¡Bossa Nova! and now that task is completed, they are embarking on a recording and a series of live performances.
The importance of having precisely the right mic for the instrument is a fine art and Lloyd Webber has used an AKG 414 ULS mic on his cello for some time, both for recording and for live work. He states: “I’ve experimented with many mics on my Stradivarius, and none reproduces its power and quality of tone better than the AKG 414 ULS.”
Sourcing the ideal microphone solutions to make ¡Bossa Nova! sound exactly right was an important task, and once again, he turned to AKG. Harman Pro Audio’s Jay Cresswell set up the deal, which includes Lloyd Webber’s trademark AKG 414 ULS large diaphragm condenser for his cello. He also uses an AKG C900 hand-held condenser for speech.
¡Bossa Nova!’s guitarist, Adam Goldsmith, is using a C451 and a C411 bug pick-up, plus a D440 on his amplifiers. Saxophonist/flautist Pete Wareham uses a combination of a C419 and a C451B, plus another C451B on the flute. Drummer/percussionist Nick France is using a standard AKG drum set, consisting of four mics plus one on the kick drum, and there’s also a C451B stereo pair for the overheads. Lucy Shaw, on the double bass, is making use of a C414 TLS and a C411. Harman Pro UK has also supplied ¡Bossa Nova! with Lloyd Webber says: “¡Bossa Nova! sound best when using the mellow sounds of AKG microphones.”
¡Bossa Nova!’s sound engineer is Ben Fitzgerald, who is based at E One Studios in Whitechapel. He works with a whole variety of artists from the jazz and classical worlds in both live and studio environments. He comments: “AKG is definitely the ultimate mic for both applications – live and recording.”
Lloyd Webber has completed numerous recordings using AKG including his latest CD, the Philip Glass: Cello Concerto with the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra, conducted by Gerard Schwarz, which is due for release in July 2004.
