Leading Lights Of The Future: White Light Supports Lighting In Schools

White Light continues its support of lighting in schools and colleges with a Graduates Open Day and lanterns and resource packs for schools.

Leading entertainment lighting supplier White Light is to continue its ongoing policy of supporting the next generation of lighting designers and technicians with a Graduates' Open Day on Wednesday July 7th.

The Open Day is aimed at anyone interested in lighting and perhaps considering a career in lighting - whether already on a lighting course or still dabbling with lighting while at school - as well as teachers and other staff who support such students' lighting work. The day will provide the opportunity to catch up with the latest lighting technology, to learn more about lighting products and techniques through demonstrations, and to find out about the perils and pitfalls of spending life working in entertainment lighting by talking to guest speakers from the industry and staff from White Light.

Visitors will be able to play with some of the very latest products from manufacturers including MA Lighting, Martin Professional, Vari-Lite, Selecon and Strand Lighting, as well as other products from White Light's extensive hire and sales stocks. Refreshments will, of course, be provided! The Open Day will run from 11am to 5pm on Wednesday 7th July at White Light's Wimbledon base (nearest tube South Wimbledon; nearest tram stop Morden Road, or just off the A24 if travelling by car). Anyone interested in attending should contact Aubs Tredget on 020 8254 4800 or by email to training@whitelightgroup.co.uk.

Schools who are unable to attend the Open Day might be interested in the latest offering from White Light's Training Initiative training and education scheme: the White Light Master Class. The Master Class will see White Light's Jason Larcombe, who holds a BA(Hons) in Lighting Design and is Vice-Chairman of the Association of Lighting Designers, visit schools to run a session of up to four hours for up to 30 students during which he will cover both the 'art' and 'practicalities' of lighting design: the principles of light, using those principles to illuminate a performer and stage, the tools of the trade, drawing a lighting plan and making the best use of resources, basic safety and establishing a career in lighting. The Master Classes will include hands-on access to equipment supplied by White Light.

Schools interested in hosting a White Light Master Class are invited to contact Jonathan Wilson, White Light's Schools Representative, on 020 8254 4800 or by email to Jonathan.Wilson@whitelightgroup.co.uk.

A number of schools have already taken up the offer of the Master Class, first made in recent White Light Schools' Initiative questionnaire prize draw. This survey of the lighting equipment currently used by schools was supported by Selecon UK, who donated a pair of Acclaim Fresnels to be offered as a prize to those completing the survey. The Fresnels were won by Haberdashers' Aske's Boys School in Hertfordshire and received by the school's Head of Drama Tim Norton. Five further schools received White Light Resource Packs: Ranelagh School in Bracknell, North London Collegiate School, Charters School in Sunningdale, Ueadington School in Oxford and Wix Primary School in Clapham.

Further information about White Light, including its Training Initiative training and education scheme and full directions for finding White Light's Wimbledon base for those attending the Graduates' Open Day, can be found at the White Light website, www.whitelight.ltd.uk.
