Millbank /Ampekko Delivers DDA Solutions to the RNLI

PA/Hearing loop experts Millbank/Ampekko were appointed by Exeter based Faber Maunsell Consulting Engineers to design and supply a host of hearing induction loop systems at the new Royal National Lifeboat Institution’s (RNLI) training Lifeboat College based in Poole, Dorset.

Looking ahead, the RNLI wanted the new college built in line with the impending DDA legislation, which enforces that all public spaces are equipped to cater for sensory disabled patrons by October 2004, Millbank’s induction loops offered a discrete and effective solution for the hard of hearing. The RNLI’s new £10.9 million purpose built college was designed by Architects Poynton Bradbury Wynter Cole and offers a dedicated education and training facility for its volunteer lifeboat crews.

As a stunning five-storey building it consists of seminar and training rooms, a 120-seat auditorium, restaurant, kitchen, bar and fitness suite, together with accommodation comprising of 60 residential rooms with en-suite bath/shower and associated external parking and landscaping.

Millbank/ Ampekko, designed, supplied, and assisted in commissioning, a series of hearing loop systems for the building, installed the Dodd Group M+E Contractors and main contractor Dean and Dyball Construction.

The Main Auditorium has been configured to operate as two independent conferencing areas if required. The systems’ are driven by two Millbank’s Talisman DL5 dynamic induction loop amplifiers, which are designed and manufactured to the highest specifications for Millbank’s Macclesfield HQ. This product offers specifiers’ more flexibility to design dynamic loops, free from radio frequency interference.

As a very flexible tool the Millbank Talisman amplifier incorporates switch selectable options to match the exact requirements of the listener or installer. Its switched frequency curve provides frequency compensation for hearing impaired individuals, whilst the response potentiometer allows the full range of frequencies to be controlled, again to suit the recipient or building characteristics.

Millbank’s loop systems are ideal for normal hearing loop applications but can also be used for diverse applications such as museum narration or secret paging in a shopping mall environment. Millbank also supplied and commissioned Signet loop systems for five meeting or conference rooms, which also have additional auxiliary inputs, this enables the systems to be integrated if required to provide a full AV presentation. In addition Millbank/ Ampekko supplied, fitted and commissioned a loop system to the main reception desk in the foyer.

Faber Maunsell’s principal engineer, Jeff Hocking commented: “We were looking for a company that could produce a bespoke induction loop scheme for implementation within a complex building. There was particular concern that the design of the system should prevent interference between adjacent meeting spaces. The loop design provided by Millbank/Ampekko was trialled on site to prior installation and proved to be successful. This subsequently became the permanent installation. Millbank/Ampekko were very helpful and proactive throughout the design, installation and commissioning process, and offered a thoroughly professional service. I would have no hesitation in using their services again for another project.”
