Projected Image Supplies Peter Gabriel

Gobo specialists Projected Image have recently supplied 126 glass gobos to lighting designer Patrick Woodroffe for the latest leg of the ongoing Peter Gabriel ‘Still Growing Up’ world tour. The gobos include a selection from their new catalogue as well as custom designs, are integral to the highly precise show.

Woodroffe approached Projected Image’s Jim Douglas to come up with completely original artwork for two of the designs. This included a girder/truss-like design that he wanted to tile together for the song ‘Tower’. The gobos were beamed vertically up a tower appearing centre stage – one of the many set pieces revealed and flown in from the special ceiling and ‘tech grid’ above the in-the-round show.

Projected Image also supplied a set of gobos of Gabriel’s face, which required some intricate production methodology to attain the correct amounts of contrast needed to retain the photographic shadow detail. These are used to project his face up onto the roof in a sinister ‘Big Brother’ style effect. Highly effective and dramatic lightening flashes are also produced with gobo.

Projected Image has worked with Patrick Woodroffe on several previous projects, most notably on the Wiener Staats Opera show he created in Vienna. “It’s been a great collaborative experience working with Patrick again,” says Douglas. “We’re honoured to be associated simultaneously with one of the best known industry lighting designers, and one of our most innovative contemporary visual artist/performers.”

Projected Image was initially recommended to Woodroffe for the Gabriel project via lighting contractors Neg Earth, with whom they have a long and positive association. It started when Neg Earth’s Julian Lavender sought a specific moon gobo, and Projected Image supplied several samples which impressed him. When Woodroffe saw the new catalogue, he was inspired to choose several more designs.

During the creative process, Woodroffe visited the company’s HQ at Three Mills Studios and was able to develop ideas directly with their top graphic designer Vanessa Johnson. This was an invaluable and productive opportunity for both parties to work ‘live’, and the whole project was sorted efficiently and effectively in a few hours.

The show is operated by lighting director Dennis Gardner, who has been with it since the start in 2002.
