Dolby Ready for Digital Cinema Presentations
Dolby Laboratories has announced that it has equipped its major screening facilities worldwide with state-of-the-art digital cinema projectors. The Los Angeles, San Francisco and UK-based cinemas are all now equipped with Hollywood-approved 2K DLP Cinema projectors. The move comes as Dolby develops its range of digital cinema mastering services and commences demonstrations of its new Digital Cinema playback system.
With these purchases, Dolby is now able to master, view and quality control Digital Cinema content from Hollywood and studios worldwide. In addition to use for mastering, quality control and screening services, the projectors will also be used to demonstrate Dolby’s new Digital Cinema presentation system. This system, which was shown in public for the first time at the recent Cinema Expo convention in Amsterdam, has been purpose-designed to offer the quality, reliability and adaptability required to deliver pristine digital shows, time after time.
Tim Partridge, senior vice president and general manager, Professional Division commented: “These installations highlight the approach that Dolby is taking to digital cinema. Not only do we have superb facilities for demonstrating the performance of our new D-Cinema playback products, but we can also offer a range of supporting services to make sure digital movies are presented just as their directors intended.”
Dolby has projectors from all three DLP Cinema manufacturers: the Dolby San Francisco headquarters has a Barco DP100 projector, the Los Angeles screening room has a Digital Projection 2K projector, and Dolby’s most recent purchase is a Christie CP2000i 2K projector for the UK facility screening room. The Los Angeles screening room also provides quality control for their advanced mastering facility for digital cinema to serve Hollywood studios. Studios simply provide the finished movie and Dolby handles the rest.
Services provided include format resizing, content compression, packaging, encryption, audio encoding, test loading, and supply of security keys. Extensive testing has been undertaken on the compression and file packaging processes to ensure the highest quality presentation.
