Graduate Success at White Light
White Light has continued its ongoing policy of supporting the next generation of lighting designers and technicians last week, holding a successful Open Day for Graduates.
Attended by visitors including A-level students from High Wycombe, students from RADA, Ravensbourne and Croydon Colleges and people working in amateur theatre but contemplating a career change into the industry, the day was designed to offer advice on both the artistic and practical sides of a life in lighting, as well as giving visitor the chance to play with some of the latest lighting equipment.
The day started with White Light's business development director Richard Wilson giving a brief history of White Light from its first production, the original Rocky Horror Show, through the changes from the Patt 23 to DMX and moving lights before covering the company's diversification into the areas of corporate and event lighting, following theatre lighting designers who have crossed over into these areas. Visitors were then given a tour of White Light's Wimbledon base followed by a demonstration of the latest automated lighting equipment by Rachel Gale from The Moving Light Company and Simon Jones from the White Light Events' production team. They were then let loose on Strand, MA and Jands consoles controlling lights from Martin and Var-Lite as well as ETC's new Revolution.
After lunch, visitors were able to benefit from the experience of those already working in the industry. White Light's Jason Larcombe and freelance lighting director Jon Driscoll discussed lighting outside the theatre. Nick Moran from the Central School of Speech and Drama discussed the career paths open to those thinking of entering the industry, covering the differences
between areas such as theatre, rock-and-roll and corporate events before discussing the 'practical' aspects such as taxation, insurance and the increasing demand for qualifications in areas such as working at height.
Lighting designer Paule Constable then led an informal discussion about the life and work of lighting, describing her career path which has seen her designing shows at London's National Theatre, across the UK and around the world, her work earning her four Olivier Award nominations and the LA Critics Circle Award for Amadeus.
A number of students took advantage of being at White Light to submit CVs, with all expressing an interest in the various training opportunities offered by White Light's ongoing Training Initiative training scheme, particularly the Open House policy that makes equipment available to anyone wanting to come in and try something new. Further details can be found at the White Light website, www.whitelight.ltd.uk/training.htm, or by calling Jason Larcombe at White Light on 020 8254 4800.
