Klark Teknik EQ’s The Valleys

Klark Teknik EQ’s The Valleys

Party In The Park, held at Swansea’s Singleton Park on 24th July, was a notable showcase for two Klark Teknik EQ products. Hosted by 96.4fm ‘The Wave’ radio, Party In The Park proved to be a veritable pop-fest with performances in front of a sold-out audience from the likes of Darius, Rachel Stevens, Blazing Squad and Deepest Blue.

FOH engineer, system designer and owner Andy Reid of APR used his EV X-Line system with main system EQ provided by a Klark Teknik DN9344 Helix slave unit, controlled remotely from a laptop computer. Of particular interest in this instance was the application of the unique ‘T-DEQ’ dynamic EQ filter which was used to accommodate the requirements of the environmental health officer.

The show had exceeded his maximum SPL limit once or twice, and so Richard “Fez” Ferriday from Midas and KT stepped in help. Taking a reading from the officer’s handheld analyser, Ferriday programmed the T-DEQ filters on the Helix to pre-emptively control excessive peak levels according to the frequencies at which they occurred. In practice this required a wide-Q filter covering between 500Hz and 3kHz, with a 9dB ‘window’ between the high and low thresholds. This worked absolutely transparently, inaudibly controlling the levels within the programmed band when within the threshold window. According to Fez: “No further comment was made by the ‘man from the council’ for the rest of the show!”

Meanwhile on stage, monitor engineer Laurie Brace was using six new Klark Teknik DN370s for the large monitor system. He was extremely appreciative of the ready availability of high and low pass filters along with swept notches, plus the unique graphic response of the units. Bruce stated: “I must say, I love the new DN370s. In EQ terms, there is nothing you can’t do with them, and they sound absolutely fantastic. In fact, I would even go so far as to say that these are very probably the best graphic EQs money can buy.”
