Litestructures And Busted Get Box-Clever For Summer Festivals

Busted’s Production company, Production North approached LiteStructures with a model box detailing exactly how they wanted the set of their tour and summer festivals to look. “The only instructions we had were to make the real thing look like the box, using mainly rental stock,” explained LiteStructures’ project manager Lou Hall. “Unlike some jobs which we turn around in under a week, we had three months to put this set together using a mixture of our existing stock but also making some custom pieces to set the Busted stage apart from other boy-bands. We also had to take into consideration the number of summer festivals and concerts they were performing at and devise a stage that would be flexible for a variety of stages and easy to downsize if necessary without ruining the overall effect.”

Chris and Lou set about creating something which Busted’s fans wouldn’t forget in a hurry. Working on a 30% custom made basis, LiteStructures used grill staircases and custom grills (through which lights, smoke and pyrotechnic effects can be transmitted), to create a very hard, metallic look. “The boys in the band had quite a lot of input into how they wanted their set to look – these ideas were then communicated to us through Production North,” said Lou. “Sometimes we only get very rough sketches, so it was great to be presented with ideas that were very clear from the start. The model box was really useful in making sure we were giving them exactly what they wanted – cutting down on the ‘back to the drawing board’ time.”

Production North’s Iain Whitehead said: “We’ve been designing sets with LiteStructures for years and we’ve never been disappointed. The projects we work on range in budget and so of course the rental option is invaluable in helping us to create star-quality sets without breaking the bank. We don’t always have the opportunity to provide LiteStructures with a scale model but regardless of the type of direction we give them they always deliver the goods! Designing a set which will not only be used on tour but packed into a truck and transported from festival to festival requires something which is easy to manoeuvre and flexible. With several chart topping performers taking to the stage one after the other, it’s vital to have a set which can be taken off stage in minutes if necessary or concealed behind a curtain while the other bands do their set.”
