New Towers Go Up in Hyde Park

Star Rigging (a division of the Star Events Group) unveiled their new V-Towers at the series of shows that have taken place in Hyde Park this summer.
Six of the truss-based structures were first used as delay towers for the line-array speakers covering the audience of 85,000 at the three Red Hot Chili Pepper’s concerts, which took place in the park in June, before also being used subsequently on The Prince’s Trust Party in the Park and Simon & Garfunkel concerts. As licensing authorities apply strict sound monitoring to the Hyde Park events, the V-Towers were important to PA company Britannia Row in managing the sound, as the company’s director Bryan Grant said: “The new towers worked very well for us. They went up very quickly, carried extra weight and looked very elegant in the expanses of Hyde Park.”
The V-Tower’s key benefits were immediately evident at Hyde Park, starting with the fact that the main vertical truss is angled, allowing the line-array speakers to be angled down to achieve effective sound dispersion without spilling into the surrounding residential area. One rigger erected each tower in just over an hour with the help of four local crew, which improves on the set up times of other delay systems. Significantly, the assembly was also performed at ground level, greatly reducing risks associated with people working at height.
The design of the V-Towers (with one vertical truss) also meant that they barely interfered with audience sight lines compared to other delay-towers, a key factor in maintaining maximum audience numbers in front of the stage for the promoters. With a weight-loading capacity of two tonnes per tower at 15m height from the ground, they can also be used for flying screens or suspending the main PA system on smaller concerts.
Star Events Group operations director Mark Armstrong commented: “We have invested in 12 of the towers, widening the array of products we can offer to event managers. The level of interest and forward bookings in the V-Towers has been phenomenal and the reaction from people who have used or seen them so far tells us we have a product that will make peoples lives easier and safer on site.”
