SSL Wins Order for Ten Consoles From Denmark’s National Broadcaster

In the face of intense international competition Solid State Logic has won two major contracts to supply ten C Series Digital Production Consoles to The Danish Broadcasting Corporation (DR).

Eight C200 and two C100 digital production consoles are destined for DR BYEN, the brand new, all-digital multimedia facility and concert hall that is currently under construction in Copenhagen. Four of the C200 consoles will be installed in the Music Recording and Concert Hall building, while the remaining C200 consoles will be installed in three television studios and one news and current affairs studio. The C100 consoles will also be installed in news and current affairs studios. These facilities are all expected to be completed by the end of 2006.

The Danish Broadcasting Company (DR) began planning its new facility in 1999 after a decision was taken to relocate the 12 DR sites in Copenhagen to a new home – DR Byen in Ørestad Nord. This new multimedia center is being built on a green field site at an estimated cost of DKK 3 billion (at 1999 prices). Construction activities are divided into four segments, which are being designed by four different architectural teams in order to obtain maximum variation within the General Plan. The segments will incorporate music recording studios, television studios, radio facilities and a large concert hall, which will be the flagship of the project. All of the technical equipment used throughout will be newly acquired and the emphasis will be on incorporating the latest, state of the art digital technology in order to prepare DR for the future.

DR’s ambition is to create a multimedia center that will be the envy of the world and will allow the broadcaster to provide audiences with better programmes and more choice. The 3,000 staff who will be moving to the new center in 2006 will enjoy a flexible, open workplace and a lively setting for teamwork and creativity.

Solid State Logic won these contracts on the strength of its expertise in digital technology, the culmination of which is its C Series range of digital production consoles, introduced at the NAB Convention in 2003.

These contracts are the largest single order SSL has received for its C Series desks. It was signed in Ørestad during June after months of thorough evaluation by DR through the EU tender process.

DR Project manager Søren Henningsen says: “We went through a long and constructive process before we finally chose the supplier for DR. We believe that SSL’s C Series consoles are well-suited for serving DR needs for future music and TV production in our new multimedia centre. The C Series are well proven and well functioning. The consoles are known for their intuitive user interface as well as easy integration to multi-track systems.

“It has been a pleasure to experience how end users and technology experts agreed upon this essential decision. I feel that, by this choice, we have achieved a partnership where mutual respect and goals for the success of the new multimedia center is in focus.”

Tim Harrison, sales manager for SSL, comments: “We’re delighted to have won this tender with our latest C Series digital consoles. The extensive tendering and evaluation process allowed us to demonstrate to DR the flexibility of the C Series architecture, meeting the many challenges this massive project presents.”
