A New Aspect from Turbosound on DMC/Technics DJ Championships
The DMC/Technics World DJ Championships, held at the Carling Hammersmith Apollo (4 - 5 September 2004, London), represented one of the first UK projects to feature the new Aspect series of high-efficiency loudspeakers. Broadcast by the BBC's 1Xtra radio channel, the DMC/Technics World DJ Championships is a prestigious annual event that demands a high-quality sound system, and is the culmination of international heats that have taken place thought this year, across Africa, the Americas, Asia Pacific and Europe.
Sound reinforcement at the event was provided by Turbosound, with the help and support of UK rental company Britannia Row Productions, and with contestants from around the world giving Turbosound's Aspect system a demanding, bass-hungry workout during the two-day championships. Turbosound deployed a total of nineteen Aspect loudspeakers, with nine in a central cluster, and five per side in the main front-of-house system, complemented by an additional twelve TSW-721 low-frequency enclosures per side. The entire system was powered by just three amplifier racks - each able to drive six mid-highs and twelve Aspect subs - demonstrating the market-leading efficiency and capability of the design. Turbosound's wedge monitors also played a significant part in the event, with six TFM-450 and ten TFM-350 units being used on stage, while two digitally-powered QLight TQ-445DP systems acted as fills for the judging panel.
The system's central cluster comprised six Aspect TA-890H touring mid-high enclosures, flown to provide the venue's upper level seating with a 75º horizontal by 30º vertical coverage, plus three Aspect TA-890L touring bass enclosures for low-end support. The front-of-house system utilised three Aspect TA-890H touring mid-high enclosures per side, with another two per side for front fill. Four LMS-D6 digital loudspeaker management systems provided control for the system.
Dominic Harter, European sales manager at Turbosound, explained the project's rationale: "Using our new Aspect series, with its very small footprint, we were able to achieve the venue-filling results that the organisers were looking for, with half the number of tops compared to our older designs. Aspect's Polyhorn waveguide concept ensured there was no drop-off between the boxes, resulting in very even coverage from relatively few loudspeakers, while the easily flyable bass bins made it a simple task to provide full-range coverage throughout the venue. The front of house system required 75º of horizontal coverage, and the fills around 50º - the Aspect tops provide this with ease, hence the small number of loudspeakers deployed. We received very enthusiastic comments about the sound quality, and people were also shocked that the small Aspect top box could generate such high levels, and with such a high degree of purity and smooth top-end coverage. There were also a number of surprised faces that these results could be achieved with such a small number of amp racks! Quality, clarity and headroom were the order of the day."
John Saunderson, of DMC, commented on the effect that the new Turbosound Aspect system had on this year's event: "This is the first year that everyone - Apollo staff, DJs and customers - noticed a real difference in the sound. Even the Jungle Brothers and the X-Ecutioners commented on the crispness of the sound. We have to thank Turbosound for supporting our World DJ Championships and providing their superb new system. It really did make a difference!"
This year's overall World DJ Championship winner was I-Emerge, from the USA, with DJ Akakabe of Japan winning the Battle for World Supremacy, and France's C2C winners of the Team Championship.
