Marquee Take Andy May Into The Digital Domain For Status Quo
Marquee Audio has sold one of the first Yamaha PM5D digital consoles in the UK to Andy May, front-of-house engineer for Status Quo's forthcoming European tour. The purchase is especially significant because it marks the band's official conversion to digital mixing . . . just as they approach their 40th anniversary in the rock 'n' roll business.
The PM5D, with 48 mic inputs and a further eight stereo inputs, has been bought by Andy May, part of the regular Status Quo team and himself a new convert to digital control. “I've always been an analogue engineer until really the beginning of this year, when Status Quo's production management suggested that I investigate seriously the digital mixing route, and the option of taking our own desk around. Marquee Audio lent me a Yamaha DM2000 and we've never looked back: out of 80 shows this year, the great majority were mixed on a digital desk.”
Andy May decided to wait until Yamaha's launch of the PM5D before making his digital purchase. “Spencer Brooks at Marquee Audio, where I've been a customer for 15 years, told me about this new console and it seemed to be the best choice for us.
“Buying digital, you can spend an awful lot of money. The PM5D offers the optimum match of price with features; it's compact enough to pull across a field at midnight and it offers the Yamaha characteristics of consistency and reliability. With Status Quo, this console will be travelling all over the world, and we'd like to be certain that, as soon as it comes off the plane, it's going to work.”
The legendary Quo is touring a five-piece band on a theatre/arena tour of Europe, starting at the German beer festivals at the end of September. A Martin Audio W8 PA system is being supplied by Capital Sound Hire, who have a long history with the band.
